i dont think it is nessery to use j word with a sabot as for size you use the size to match the sabots you have . the most common size is 44 or 45 pistol boolits

Get the 54/45 sabots and use a boolit cast to .452. Worked pretty well in a Knight MK-85 .54 I have with the old 454424.

My son is using maxi balls I cast in his 54 with good results.

If you use the Lee R.E.A.L. boolit you won't need any steenkin' sabots. Boolit weight is 300 and 380 grain, lots of weight. Granted, not the FPS of a sabot, but dead is dead!

I just use RB in my 54 flinter... .525 pure lead and 85 grains 2f has never failed out to my limited visibility (brushy swampy ) of 35 yards.

I also use round ball, .530" and 110 gr FFg Triple Seven. I guess my woods aren't quite as thick -- I like to reach out to at least 60 or 70 yards. Every gun's different, too.

About 3 months ago my neighbor and I transformed 25 lbs. of pure lead into maxi-balls. for the Black Mountain magnum he had you can use either maxi`s or saboted slugs. For his sabot loads he used 45 cal RCBS 250 swc boolits from ww lead for an excellent saboted shoot. It must work, he has taken three deer in 3 yrs. with that combo load and 100gr. Pyrodex loose powder with a musket cap. :castmine: Robert

I cast the LEE R.E.A.L. 380gr boolit out of pure lead. With 90gr of 2F Black out of my T/C Firehawk, it hits game like a sledgehammer! 100yd accuracy is great so I've never gone back to sabots.

I seen hogs hit with this load that looked like they were struck by lightning! BOOOM, lights out!

Joe Bob:

Not my area of expertise but I saw your post. There are lots of pan lube recipes for black powder if you do a search.

Here is a bunch of lube info some for BP and some not, so be particular:

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=29683

Post #11 mentions Barry Darr's lube for pan lubing

Also Goatlips info on pan lubing here:

http://goatlipstips.cas-town.com/panlubing.html

I'm sure some BP shooters will chime in with advice too.

I hope that helps

I am not sure what has happened here! I was reading a post about difficulty with pan lubing (REAL boolits I think) so looked up some info for Joe Bob. There does not appear to be a Joe Bob or a post.

Could this be dimentia?

Longbow...It's not dementia. I deleted the post because I realized that I had posted it in another place on the sight. I posted the reason, but it didn't show up. 'Preciate the info and am pursuing it right now. Reason I'm a little late with this is the hospital wanted me for a day. JB

Whew! You had me worried for a moment or maybe a couple of days!

I hope that was of some help.

Also, I hope the hospital didn't want you for anything too serious.

I cast a .530 ball for my .54.

If your looking to combine it with sabots you might want to try .54/.45 cal sabots for your gun instead of the .54/.44 cal sabots. The thinner sabot petals will release quicker.

Otherwise, I would imagine you should be able to get good performance from anything that is middle-of-the-road as far as pistol weights go. In other words don't go getting a .45 mold that is intended for a .45-70 and drops a 350 grain bullet or heavier. Get a .45 mold intended for a pistol that drops a 230 to 250 grain bullet. This is assuming you've got a 1:28 to 1:48 rifling pitch.

If your .54 has a really slow pitch like 1:66 you might want as short and stubby a bullet you can find.
