What are the better bolt action .22 rifles with a tubular magazine?

Well, it would appear that the Marlin is pretty much your only option if you want something new and shiny, although that does not necessarily qualify it as "best".

However, the WIN M-72 and the REM M-512 are very hard to beat for older used guns. I would put them against just about anything else out there, all thing being equal. I have been REM fanboy for nearly 70 years but I think if I had my choice I would choose the WIN M-72 because it is basically a WIN M-69 with a tube magazine and the 69 is a terrific rifle. Even the WIN M-75 is based on it.

Of course there are myriad other makes and models from yesteryear available but you asked for opinions as to the best, so that is my opinion.

I have a springfield/stevens. 84/86 series if i recall correctly. Older tube feed bolt and semi-auto rifles. They are awesome shooters. Very accurate.

Mossberg made some fine .22 rifles. I like the m46mb, have had mine for about 60 years.

I prefer the Win 72 but Rem 512 is much easier to find. It may be regional but the Win was a few dollars more.

I like my Winchester 72A and it is pretty much my go-to .22 rifle.

I have a Winchester 72A and a Remington 512. Both are equally accurate but the Winchester has a grooved receiver while the Remington does not.
Both are minute of squirrel head out to 50 yards.

Any of the pre-WW2 old school Remingtons are all milled parts, blued steel and walnut works of art.

The Remington 512 and Marlins I've used have been great, the Remington is smoother and the safety works in the right direction..... one of my brothers came up with a Cooey that works but operating the action sounds like the tracks on a bulldozer- so avoid that one haha.

There are so many older guns that fit that description ...most of which are pretty equal...I think it would be better finding a gun first then researching it to see what people say. However the first thing that came to my mind were the Rifles that were made around WWII In Australia by the same people that made the Enfield No I Mark III...Many people here know more about it than I so I will let them chime in.

I agree with Johniv about the Mossberg M46. I also like the Mossberg M146 that was produced in the 50's. I wish I had bought one with the different sight choices. I lusted after that T type bolt handle & 30 shot .22 short capacity.

For now I favor my Remington 512P

I’m a fan of the Mossberg 46/146 myself. I have a 146 with T-bolt and it’s a great lightweight shooter. Actually prefer taking it out most of the time over my Winchester 52 Sporter (remake). Gave FIL another 146 that he loves and gave my dad a 46 to restore and he loves taking it out.

The old Browning 22 tube feds are also a great one to go after and is still made.

Grandpa had an old Savage or Stevens I think, my uncle had it the last I knew.

This is one of the few types of popular .22 rifles that I don't have very much experience with, but they do make a lot of sense: no way to lose a detachable box mag, and a full mag should be plenty for a day of small game hunting.

With all that said, I have never seen a Mossberg .22 that didn't want to shoot like a target rifle.

I won many a silhouette match with my Rem 512. All of them in fact. 8-)

Superbly balanced rifle, slick action and very fast to operate. I glued a scope onto it and that has worked for me for 40 years. Mine is a 1947 manufacture IIRC. The muzzle is (or was) worn so I cut 1/2 an inch off. I won those comps with the worn muzzle. Groups opened up past 100 yds. Now they don't.

My old Remington 582 is very accurate. It's taken a lot of small game for me over the years.
