I refinished a Traditions Hawken, did some Faux tiger stripe on the beechwood stock.

I had picked up a Trad. Hawken, with a great barrel with a stock the guy had trimmed down some, it looked good but needed refinishing. I put a couple of light coats of stain, then poured some alcohol based stain in a shallow cup, and let it evaporate for about an hour, then with a tiny artist brush, and 2 hours, tiger striped the stock. Did it all freehand. Then I put on another light coat of stain, and 3 coats of finish. I polished the brass, browned the barrel, and put on a set of sights, that are about 3x smaller than the factory, should be good for target shooting. Just thought I would share, a buddy will be posting pics for me. Let the laughter begin.

I faux did mine with a black marker. It looks pretty good from a distance but you can tell up close. I tried with thinned paint and an artist brush. I was hoping I could feather it with light sanding but it didn't work out.

I had a stock that I wrapped with copper wire.
Then lightly burned the surface of the wood with the copper wire wrapped tight, and used my propane torch.
The flame went between the coils of wire and left nice stripes.
Give it a try on a scrap piece of wood.
The first time I tried it was on a hammer handle , then on a shovel.
After sanding lightly and staining , the wood came out great and Tiger Striped.
Don't get the torch too close or it will heat up the copper too much and the flame will burn grooves between the coils of wire wrap.
I have TOW maple inletted Hawken stock and a Traditions Saint Louis Hawken Kit with a light wood stock that I might finish this way.
I tried finishing a 22 stock one time doing a Tiger Stripe pattern with a Walnut Stain touch up pen.
It came out looking like a 5 year old went crazy with a Magic Marker.

Many people used rope wrapped around the stock and burned it. I have an old antique piece from the mid 1800s that looks that way.

Whoa, my bad! Those pics are of Koger's rifle- I just posted the pics. I wish I'd done the stock. My communication skills ain't all that.
I recall reading that old time striping was done with cotton string soaked in pitch. It was set afire and pulled around the wood leaving charred stripes behind. As Moonman mentioned.

I have seen stocks that were done by soaking a cotton line in Red Man Chewing Tabacco mixed with water to make a stain.
Then the damp string was wrapped around the stock and left to dry and stain lines on the stock.
I saw them back in the 80's at a shop called the Flintlock in Anaheim CA.
They were a great ML shop.
I don't think they are still there.

Guys thanks for all the comments. At about 2-3 foot away from the stock, it looks real, which was what I was going. The bore on this rifle is pristine, and I put some really small, but easy to see sights, which would be good for target or hunting. Hoping to get this rifle in the hands of a capable youngster wanting to get into black powder shooting, at a good price.

But don't limit your market to the Younger Newbies.
I am sure there are lots of Old Geezers that would love to have this rifle.
Especially as a Working Display to hang over the fireplace or on the wall of your Man Cave.

That faux striping looks pretty good! It is supposed to imitate tiger stripe/shell flame maple.

Here is my cased Armi San Marco 1860 Army shoulder stock with actual stained tiger stripe maple for comparison.
