my friend has a mannlicher steyr M95/34 carbine in 8x56R that used to be his father's(he passed away last year). since he doesn't handload and 8x56R is not on the shelf of every walmart, he wants to sell it. i'll look it over, either this weekend or the next, and i'll buy it or just give him a wave and smile and say "no thank you".

the 8x57R isn't a favorite of mine(bore runs .329-.340"), but i think i could rebore it to 35-40 krag and put on an old aperture sight. then i'll have another 35 cal bore!!! my questions is, has anybody done this? what do you think about it? what do you do with 8x56R stripper clips to make into 35-40 krag stripper clips?

:veryconfuno, i don't have any pictures of it. ;) i'll just have to wait and see.

Check out the prices on gunbroker before you re-bore it! They're getting pretty rare in good condition. Please post some pics if you get it.

They don't use "stripper" clips. They use an en-bloc clip which can be hard to locate. I have a couple m95's and I reload and cast bullets for them. Lots of fun to shoot!

I just bought one a few short weeks ago.
1- slug the bore. Know for sure. Mines .332 modern off the self bullet is .329
2-buy lee push through 8x56r die. See my post replies about what to do.
3-buy .338 boolits and j words.
4-size them down to your bore size with the lee. ( i have loads if you want them ).
5-contact jes about what you want done. If it can be done he can do it. Rechambered and rebored.
A quick ps do not single load a cartridge unless it comes from the clip. It can break the extractor which has kinda become like hens tooth

If you're going to spend the money for re-boring the barrel you might consider just re-barreling it to .30-40 Krag. Forum Member Buckshot did so and has posted about it several times. You might find it on a "search", or contact him directly for information concerning the conversion. If I recall correctly he did have to tweak the clips a bit, but got it to work.

Easiest solution is to leave it in 8x56Rmm and keep an eye open for boxer brass. I bought a couple of hundred cases through Midway a few years ago, manufactured by Privi Partizan if I recall correctly. I think they still load commercial hunting rounds. in any event, you can find the brass if you keep your eyes open. I've even see it for sale a couple of times on this forum. You could load the brass with appropriately sized cast bullets that fit your bore. I have 5 of these rifles and the smallest bore diameter is .332 and the largest .336. If you can get someone to give it to you, once fired military Berdan-primed brass can be converted to Boxer primers. Also, although quite pricy, RCBS makes a special die set to convert 7.62x54Rmm to 8x56Rmm.

These "short rifles" have a reputation for delivering a rather stout recoil.

i know!!!!![smilie=l: :veryconfu i hate the recoil it produces(i have shot the short rifles). i "imagine" a 245gr saeco is going 1600-1700fps from a 35-40 krag to kill deer with.

Privi used to be fairly accessible/ brass boxer and moderate price.

They kick the worst of any milsurp rifle I've ever fired. Fact. But very nice guns.

Graft and sons still has boxer primed brass in stock. A couple weeks back they had primed brass on clearance for half the price of un-primed. Beagle a Lee mold scrounge some dies and enjoy at that point. If a 35-40 kraig is your goal you may want to start with a rifle that is more user friendly. My full rifle kicks like a mule and it takes an aggressive swat to cycle the action when loaded.

I still have one ( now hangs on the wall of my log cabin) I bought back in the early 90’s when they were dirt cheap( around $75). I also have some of the 1938 Nazi ammo on enbloc clips that was readily available. They are cool little guns and kick like a mule. I realize we usually don’t try to make economic sense of much that we do in this hobby, but spending that much money on one of these guns really is counterproductive. If you buy it, keep it as is. Hunt for 8x56r supplies and enjoy it. Just my humble opinion.

i finally got around to comparing both cartridges and the diameter of the krag is too small. so i'll rebarrel it or stay the same.

Yes, Buckshot rebarreled his. That would be necessary just because of the bore size.

I have a 95/34 and m95 stutzen. I load the Lee c338-220-1R sized, lubed and checked in a Lyman 450 then sized .334" in a push thru sizer Buckshot made for me. I load 'em over 16 gr. 2400 - suits my purposes just fine.

A few years back , I converted some 8x 56R berdan cases to Boxer primers for a friend so he could reload them.
It works and isn't that hard to do if you have berdan cases.

my friend showed up and he wants a price that is beyond my capabilities, so i said no, thank you.

i noticed right off the bat, the stock was cracked(s), yes, plural. it didn't have a handgaurd or the two bands. the action and barrel are rusty(give them a bath, scrub bath, scrub........until it needs reblued. and while your at, bathe the magazine housing too. the bore looked fine(?), nothing better than elbow grease. he didn't have enbloc clips, so i'll take his word it function. i should have field strip it, but i quit going it over when he told the price.

I forget if the carbine had the barrel jacket/shroud on it, but the rifles did have barrel jackets/shrouds.You need to remove the shroud to make sure the outside of the barrel is not all rusted and pitted. I have seen some guns that looked nice but the barrel was rusted and badly pitted under that barrel shroud. I guess the military didn't consider it important as they didn't think the rifles would have a really long life. it isn't normally something the troops would be removing in the field for cleaning and oiling.

Earl-- are you thinking of the 1888 Commission Rifle? I've never run across a Steyr M95 with a barrel shroud.

You can also use the 7.62X54 Russian military brass. Its slightly short but can work for some loads. I have one and have not shot it recently. Like stated I also have tried the 338 Lee bullet. Supposed to be 330 diameter but some of the comments clear up some of the issues I had with it.

I could've bought these back when they was $75.00 when I had my C&R but, ammo was hard to come by. I wish I had just bit the bullet.

I bought one last year, and about 100 rds of the old ammo, which should last me a long time since I'll shoot maybe one round a year. I call it the Hungarian Chiropractor. I did buy new brass, Lee dies and mold but I haven't cast or reloaded for it yet. I also bought an extra ejector online - I heard they can be fragile and hard to find.
