View Full Version : My nephew shot a retarded deer

My 12 year old nephew when deer hunting for the first time this last weekend, successfully even. He shot a nice little buck with the old, underpowered, outdated 30-30. We are quite certain that the deer was mentally retarded or deficient in at least some of his faculties because his reaction to being shot, was to run 10 feet and lay down and die. Apparently he did not understand that nowadays it takes at least a .300 super- stomper-whackem-stackem magnum of one sort or another with 14,000 pounds of energy for a humane deer kill. Here he was, shot with a lowly 30-30 at about 50 yards, lying down and dying on the job. Just imagine how embarrassing that would be if it got around in the deer community.

The shame of it all was probably what killed him.

I'd even go so far as to bet that that there thutty-thutty weren't even loaded hot! FWIW there's a BIG problem with doubting the efficacy of weapons of bygone ages. They (spears, knives, arrows, muzzleloaders, etc. ) killed handily then, and do just as well now. Ain't it funny how time alone doesn't seem to have much effect on this.

Whenever I shoot a deer with a 30-30, I stick an arrow in the hole before I drag it out. That way all parties involved are spared the public humiliation...

I had to listen today about how my brother-in-law debased himself to using my homemade 12 gauge slugs on a stupid 4 point. At a distance of about 75 yds he poked at the idiot deer. It had the gaul to lay down right there and go to sleep (permanently)! That little LEE 1 oz. slug only took out both lungs, half the heart, the opposite shoulder was broke and a hole the size of Rhode Island , brother in law words, in the hide. Guess he won`t laugh at my reloads now! :bigsmyl2: [smilie=w:

Yeah, right. Next thing you'll be telling us you used a CAST boolit. Everyone knows you can't kill "todays" deer with a 30-30 or a cast boolit, let alone a 30-30 WITH a cast boolit. :Fire:[smilie=l:

I had a guy tell me you couldn't kill a deer with a .22LR once. I told him to go tell the deer that. Right behind the ear... dead as a hammer. It's all about the shot.

Let me think back to about 1967............ a buddy and I killed several deer with .22's........kinda late in the evening...if you know what I mean...it was ......"Whats for dinner"[smilie=1:
I can imagine the deer gossip........."Did you hear ,Harrold was killed by a .22......Joe got it with a 30-30..........Gary left the heard by a arrow...........
Give me a break......what ever works

I blame all this on the deer's parents for failing to teach him any better. Imagine, laying down on the job like that with no more than a 30-30 bullet in him. Why, if MY yearling layed down for as little as that, I'd shoot him myself!!

A .30-30. INDEED![smilie=1:

How DARE you call that deer "retarded"? Where's your compassion? The proper description is that he had a "learning disability".

A neighbor hung an Elk on his meat pole that had a broken skull, one spike was off at an angle. His story was that it was running when he shot it and it then ran into a tree. The story everyone else believed was that it hit the tree first. Thats what I thought of when I saw the title.

He may have been stupid, but I don't think he was dumb.

I don't think there was a thing wrong with the deer. I just think Nephew is a damn fine shoot...after all everyone knows it take a very accurately placed shot to kill a deer with a 30-30. Congratulations kid on a job well done!!!

I say the deer WAS a retard. To stand there and let someone shoot at it with a 30-30 after reading how poor a gun it is just tells me he was a school dropout! But then again, schools have changed all their books to feely-touchy stuff. :brokenima
Seen it myself once. I shot a big doe out of a herd and when it fell, the whole herd laid down. I was waitin fer them to pass the Kool Aid! [smilie=1:

Actually the deer was shot with dads 974 WHAM BANGER nitro express. In these P C times they were afraid dad would have been jailed for child abuse (recoil) so they shamefully selected the 30-30 as weapon of choice.:drinks:

Since I last posted, I have consulted with some of my hunting colleges and they believe the Deer wasn't retarded just lame.

Because it was lame it wasn't able to outrun the slow moving projectile from the outmoded rifle.

Hunters have over the years had to increase the velocity of hunting cartridges as the deer were learning how to outrun the older cartridges, hence the need for todays .300 Supersonicloudenboomenslamenbamen cartridges. :kidding:

I'm eyeing my circa 1949 Marlin 30-30 right now. In fact it's on the couch leaning upward so the light is showing off it's nice figured stock, and I can gaze over at periodically.

Was thinking about shooting it today, and even with the coveted "Ballard" rifling I'm wondering "What's the use?"

Happy Thanksgiving and may that dumb deer taste good anyway ....... and thank the new hunter.

We wish him many more one shot kills ...... even if the deer he picks ain't too bright .....

What are you going to do with all that meat that didn't get blown off the deer and deposited in the next county?
