I have a 1908 Colt .25 hammerless that has a lot of gouges, burrs, and rough edges on some of the internal parts. What's the best way to smooth out metal before I reblue it? Files seem a little aggressive.

Fine finish stones can be used , not the india or sharping stones but a true polish stone die makers an tool makers use. These are softer grits and bonds allowing them to break down and stay sharp. These come in various sizes and shapes. A gentle touch is needed as these are fragile.

Another way would be some this hard wood strips 1/8" thick X 3/8 - 1/2" wide around 4-6" and glue the appropriate sand paper to it.

Sometimes those little parts respond well to rubbing them on top of your leg while wearing old blue jeans.
