C309-180-r in 308

I’ve got the lee c309-180-r and want to work up a load in my 308w Remington 788 powders I have on hand are red, blue and, green dot, tight group, unique, win 231 and 296, 2400, bullseye, and Vectan as and A1 for pistol and imr 4895,4064,4320,7828, and rl7 any advice would be appreciated this is going to be a target load out to 200 yards

I have shot a lot of those through my .308 (26" barrel, 1:10 twist), lubed and PC. I like the PC better even though accuracy is about the same.

Just about any powder will work if you can load to lower velocities.

I have used IMR4198, IMR4895 and Varget. All give good accuracy when the velocity is between 1600 and 2000fps.

I use Blue Dot for a plinker load, 1000 to 1100fps. It is more accurate than I would have guessed but hard to shoot at 200yd and longer. Takes a while for the bullet to get there :)

Getting othe powders than I have is difficult in my town as it is quite isolated and there is no overland route to it makes shipping expensive for such items I guess I will try some 4895 but was wondering if anyone has tried rl7 I’m hoping to be in the 2000 FPS arena

For just killing paper 16-18ish grs of 2400 should do well .I used the Lee 185 a lot with17.5 grs of 2400 at 200 yds when I shot nra highpower

RL7 and 4198 are pretty similar. You could try RL7, starting with 4198 loading data, as long as you stay away from the edge, and don't push any envelopes. (Yes, I have done this.)

If it were me, I'd be looking for a nice clean-burning load with enough pressure to keep your .308 brass from getting shorter with successive firings.

FWIW, I would not be looking for 2000 fps.

^ What he said. I use a Lee 180 GB boolit over 17 grains of 2400 and it is moa.

rl7 would probably be fine. I use rl15 and varget for my jacketed loads. 2400 is what CE Harris recommends. 10gn for plinking and ~16gn for longer ranges.

I have used Alliant Rldr 7 quite a bit in the 308 for 200 yard shooting, 20-25 grains works very well under 170 to 200 grain boolits. On my 200 yd Wyoming range with its Westerly crosswind, I can usually get 2" plus/minus vertical dispersion with a couple Savage 99's. I have used Fed 210 Match and CCI 200 with little difference noted. The wind usually runs horizontal out to 4-5, sometimes more. I usually quit when the wind goes over 16-17 mph. At 200 yards the wind becomes a significant fact with BC and velocity both reducing wind drift.There is a lotta' weather in that last 150 yards. Haven't chronographed these loads, all are gas-checked. Haven't tried the Lee but it should do well.

I'm new to casting boolits and seems like the c309-180 might be a good one for me. Have a Savage Model 10, 24", 1:10 twist. It loves the 175 grn. SMK's with Varget so it's great to see and hear input on others do with cast recipes/boolits, etc. I own a c309-150 mould but haven't tried it yet.
*Clarification: I am not new to Casting Boolits (the forum), I'm new to actually casting boolits for myself!

When I wanted to try cast bullets in my .308 I went to Montana Bullets web site and picked several to try just to see how well they shot out of my rifle. FYI the 165SIL were really accurate. The 311299's were a close second. It is a nice way to try out bullets from a mold you are considering purchasing.

Once I found that cast shot well in my rifle I picked up the Lee C309-180 mold to see how well I could do casting these days. I had cast a lot for pistols many years ago, but, not rifle. Once I experimented with the Lee bullets I picked up an Accurate Mold 31-210E and am now refining the loads for that bullet. Casting with the more expensive mold is much easier than with the Lee and I could specify the diameters for my rifle.

i use 18gn of 2400 in my 308 .zeroed at 100yards approx 2ft drop at 200yards

I've had good luck with 4198 in my M1A with cast 180RNs & 190s.

I did some research on 'The Load' with Red Dot for .30-06 and .308.
I was impressed enough to load up a handful, but haven't tried them yet.
