I need advice on what to chamber a 30/06 barrel to that will clean up the chamber.

I have 2 30/06 Savage 110 barrels, that I would not mind rechambering, re boring to another caliber like .35 , or .400 Whelen, 338/06, or anything that will work with the same case size head. I was leaning towards the .35 Whelen, since that should clean up the bore and case differences I think. One of these barrels, is a tack driver, I am talking about nearly 1/2" groups with factory ammo, and the other shoots 1", only shot it 3 times to be fair. I want to primarily use cast boolets, and I have a ton of .35 bullets, and a 6 cavity 200gr GC lee mold. All replies appreciated.

If the chamber is all that is Bad or in Question , then why not just have to shortened and rechanbered.
But you may find it is a lot cheaper to just buy yourself a new barrel in the caliber you want.
You can always sell off your other barrels and recoup some of your money.
Another option is to buy a new bolt head in Magnum caliber and have your rifle rechambered to 300 Win Mag.

The .30-06 conversion to .35 Whelan is a simple rebore/rifling from .308" to .358", and there should be no chamber issues.

I would strongly advise you, however, to contact re-bore specialist Jesse Ocumpaugh @ www.35caliber.com - who is the best person for you to contact about your desires.

You have a bunch of options, but it sounds like the 35 Whelen or 338-06 might be the best.

Why not try the 375/06 if only to have something different. Still uses the same '06 case and send it to Jessie to have it rebored to 375 caliber. In essence you'll have basically have a new barrel in the choice of a couple twists and heavy weight bullets. Frank

I am the odd man out here. The cost to rebore is going to be close to the cost of a new pre-fit barrel. IMHO reboring is a good option barrels that are not readily available as a pre-fit, wanting to stay as original as possible or having sentimental value.

With the easy of changing Savage 110 barrels pre-fits are the way to go.

I agree, why spend the money to re chamber the factory barrel that is not that great or re bore some thing when you have a lot of premium barrel makers offering pre fits for the same or less money which are better barrels.
either sell them for cheap or if you have a lathe, treat them as barrel blanks for a blaster.

The barrels have no damage. And after posting this, I found all kinds of custom barrels, for less than the rebore job. I was going to go with JES, as I have one of his 336 Marling 30/30 rebores to 38/55, and it is literally a tack driver. Just another Duuh moment on my part.

Those Savage barrels would make dandy stub job liners if you wanted to go that route.

If Jesse's rebore is $245, that compares well with the Shilen at $299 or more and the Criterion at over $400. Further searches may beat Jesse's price but will a cheaper barrel compare in quality to Jesse's rebore? Have fun.
