A few months ago I was gifted a Sears label Mod. 70 in .270 cal. In spite of the horrible trigger, it shoots cast very well. Will any of the "drop in" new triggers for a post 64 Mod. 70 fit this rifle?

Have you taken a look at the trigger to find the problem? They are very simple, and one of the best for a rifle.

It might be worth pulling the trigger group and cleaning it with brake cleaner and then use the appropriate light machine oil on things like pins and bearing surfaces. I have seen many a good trigger get crudded up and just not perform at all or definitely not perform well. I cannot speak to Winchester triggers directly as all of my bolt guns are Remington, but the same ideas apply.

Here's a Winchester Model 70 trigger adjustment tutorial -

Since Sears discontinued their Model 70 variation in 1973, your rifle should have the same trigger.

( the newer post 2009 FN/Winchesters have a different built-up trigger body with adjustments )

Maybe explain horrible, stepping, heavy, long? If memory is correct two 1/4" wrenches and a little screwdriver and sometimes a crisp high two pounds could be found. Now chasing the safety is another story, you will be there for a while.
