What's your favorite chambering for big game in a 10" TC contender, and why?

375 Winchester, Big boolits. I have a load with AA1680 and Hornady that chrongraphs at 2071 fps. Going to make a load with Lyman 375449 that weighs 290 grs sized and lubed. Using this boolit in my 38-55 also.

For deer-sized game, I'm a big fan of the 10" 6.5 TCU, and have used it to take several mulies and antelope. For bigger stuff like elk, my favorite 10" Contenders are the .45 Colt and the .40-50 Sharps Straight, loaded with heavy cast bullets.

I'm also a fan of the 6.5 although it is an 11". I am also quite fond of another 11 in 7-30 waters. The funnest one is probably the .357 barrel and versatile enough for small game to deer with proper loads.

A 10" barrel 7mmTCU works really well on Antelope out to 250 yards with a 120 grain bullet. I would imagine it would do as well on deer sized with a 140.

I know this is an old thread, so maybe no one is looking any more...my favorite is .30 herret. 7 or 8 deer dropping within sight convinced me.

Ok, ain't got no Contenders but do have a Rem. XP100 rechambered from 221 Fireball to 6MM Rem.wearing a10 inch tube. It's an ideal gun chambered in an ideal round that is capable of takeing most anything i want to shoot with it loaded with lite or heavy bullets. After all when shooting it I'll pass on all but the very closest to perfect shots.Dennis http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2002-12/79966/EVQAL-P1010001.JPG

.30-30 Win. Will handle anything I might want to shoot with a handgun and mine will produce acceptable accuracy with anything from 120 to 185 gr boolit (or bullet) weights.

For 50yds or less my choice would be 45 Colt, for up to about 100yds I have a 357 Maximum barrel (although it is 14") that shoots 180gr bullets at 1835fps and is damn accurate. I am not capable of shooting at a game animal past 100yds with a pistol...I switch to the long guns for that.

I guess what this whole exercise points out is that there are a lot of calibers that will do the job. My favorite 10 incher is a 41 mag. It kicks a lot less than a 44, hits about as hard and shoots flater. However the difference in trajactory is only noticable on paper.

I use it for deer size game when I don't feel like playing with my 45-70 which is a 16 inch barrel, or my 357 max which is too new to judge.

The 41 is pleasant enough to enjoy shooting. However, I havent tried the 6.5's or 7's listed, so I guess I will have to try them all before I can really answer the question.
