View Full Version : So how do you carry your handgun?

I carry either at the 3 and 9 o’clock position on duty. I also carry in vertical shoulder holsters. I also carry a little .38 Special on my ankle. I personally think appendix carry is the opening for an EXTREMELY painful and permanent Birth Control method. Your thoughts on carrying positions. What do you like?

3:00 and 9:00 if im dual carrying in the woods. The 9:00 gun is but forward for cross draw. I carry a pocket pistol most often. Right front pocket.

I carry a 1911 at the 3-3:30 position. I have carried a backup small of the back, but traded it off. Oft in the field I'll carry a revolver bandoleer style. I made a makeshift bandoleer holster by putting a sling on a cheap holster we have. It works pretty good for a Ruger blackhawk, a single six, or a smith 686, but is ugly.

J frame, pocket.

This is my usual method. I want to go to a little pocket automatic but it's hard to part with the J frame, it's been with me for so long.

If you are reasonably slim, upright most of the time, and able to wear a loose fitting, un-tucked shirt, the appendix carry has much to recommend it to the professional gun-toter. Three men who I respect greatly carried that way while working undercover. None of them ever had occasion to shoot themselves. However, if you spend a great deal of time seated, must wear your shirts tucked in, or are unfamiliar with your fire-arm, then it is not for you.
I wear a revolver at the 4 o'clock position, either IWB or OWB in a pancake-style holster. Otherwise, I carry an LCP in my right front pocket.

For years I carried a full size 1911 OWB in a Desantis pancake at 4:00.

Trouble worn out parts has made it hard to carry it all day. I recently gave in and bought a plastic 9mm. I love my 1911's but my new Walther PPS is so light that I forget it's there. I started out carrying IWB with an Alien Gear holster at 3:30-4:00. Unfortunately my attempts to gain weight have finally come to fruition and my IWB will no longer fit in some of my pants. Until I resolve that, I am carrying OWB at 4:00 with an Alien Gear belt slide holster.

Now a shameless plug for AG :)

I bought my first AG holster last September. Now I have three. I have shells for my favorite pistols and bases for various styles of carry. Various IWB including appendix. OWB belt slide or paddle. Mix and match.

Also, their customer service is AWESOME! if you buy AG gear I would go direct to them. They have really gone above and beyond for me.

Edit: Regarding pocket carry, I would recommend a "pocket holster" that covers the trigger guard. I used to pocket carry all of the time then one day I was carrying a large TV out to my truck and BANG! there was suddenly a large opening in my pocket. Not just a small hole. It was shredded. Thank God that there was nobody else around to get shot and I managed to escape without any new holes.

Model 13 S&W 3" cross draw left side just forward of the hip bone. Fits snug against the body, conceals well there, easy to get to, best of all, the muzzle is pointing to the rear and slightly away from my hip. I may get a powder burn in a wrestling match, but I will not get shot in the leg or hip. james

lately I used a sub compact .45auto in a pocket holster and just wear painters pants or cargo pants.
Occasionally I dress up more with dress pants or wear shorts and then I carry a small .380 in a pocket holster.
In the past I used to carry a 1911 .45 auto all the time using a IWB holster. but the older I got the less enthused I became about carrying it though.

OWB, hunting or just open carry, 3:00 in a pancake (various revolvers and autos). Concealed, IWB appendix, Beretta 92G, or Sig 365, always in fitted kidex holster with 100% trigger coverage. If a holstered gun isn't safe to carry appendix in a proper holster, it's not safe to carry on your hip with a round under the firing pin either! :Fire:

My normal mode of dress is bib overalls. There is no waistband, so there is no place for a holster of any kind except for a pocket holster. Pocket holster works good, but then there is no place for carrying extra ammo or magazines. The solution is a home made belly band. Pistol or revolver fits in a pocket on the right side, and a pocket on the left side will accommodate up to 4 magazines or ammo strips. The belly band is not especially handy for quick draws, but it is a whole lot better than not having a weapon with me.

Yaqui slide, strong side for 1911. Pocket 9 in right front jeans pocket. When driving, a cross draw works with no interference from seat belt latch. When I rarely carry my SBH with red dot sight, I use an Uncle Mikes bandoleer ("cross chest").

Depends on time of year (hot or cold) and how I'm dressed. Summer, S&W J frame .357 in a Bianchi pocket holster, or a Kimber Ultra Carry .45cap in a Stealth Gear AIWB. Winter, the ones I carry in summer plus commander size .45 in a Stealth Gear IWB at 4 o'clock, or a S&W 3" barrel 686 in a Galco hi ride. When you carry in New Yorkistan it has to be concealed at all times, or you lose your permit with one complaint. After the hassle of getting a CCP here you don't want to lose it!

Colt lightweight agent 38 or Mustang 380 in cargo pant/ shorts for summer carry. Aviator leather jacket for winter carry. No holsters and the gun’s weight is offset with wallet/ keys on the other side. For absolute minimal impression in jeans or slacks, S&W escort 22LR. At least I have a gun. Probably should be replaced with a LCP 380.

Since 1970...IWB behind the left hip butt forward. Have carried everything from a 2" snubbie to a 6.5" 29-2 there. Since the mid 1970s have carried almost nothing but a 1911 there with an IWB holster or just slide in by itself...

Most of the time now I carry a Colt Commander in a REMORA IWB holster...slides in easy and never comes out with the gun... Can be shifted around for comfort and with the butt forward the gun hardly prints at all...

Australian gun laws are pretty strict these days, and carrying a handgun is basically limited to the Police, some security people, and those shadowy figures employed by the Federal government. Transportation laws are also very tight....locked up, unloaded and secured out of site. Hunting is strictly prohibited, and recreational shooters can only use their pistols at approved target ranges, although if you live in the middle of nowhere like I do, nobody really worries too much if you practice at home. Just need to keep well away from roads, livestock and inhabited dwellings.

However......many years ago I lived in the Northern Territory, where game like Buffalo, Wild Boar, camels etc were commonplace, and carried my first ever centre fire revolver ( a 1976 Colt Python ) when ever I went hunting alone. I just didn't want anyone knowing I had it, let alone know I was hunting with it. That's a story for another time, but the thread is about how you carry. What I found was that hip holsters were really impractical, and caused the revolver to snag on everything when going through thick scrub, plus the constant concern of it unsnapping the retaining strap. That Python cost me a packet ( $450.00 AUD back then was really big dollars) and I had no intention of losing it in a swamp or thick mimosa bush.

Eventually I got a Cobbler that repaired shoes and boots to make me a shoulder holster, and that completely fixed the problem. Tucked under my vest or jacket, it was totally protected from the elements, didn't catch on anything, and was very easy to draw in a confined space. I still have it, although the use of shoulder holsters are now prohibited on Pistol ranges. I've since bought another hip holster for my GP100, and have a fully enclosed military holster for my Black powder 455 Webley, but all these years later, wearing the shoulder holster just brings back great memories, even if I can't use it outside of my own property.

In my range bag, in the trunk of my car, to and from the range. Seriously, my guns are like golf clubs, just toys.

Oh, during deer season the .44 mag goes in a simple Uncle Mike's vertical shoulder holster, both to keep it protected under my coat, and to put the weight on my shoulders.

Usually on or just behind my right hip. When I wore a badge, either department issued leather or leather from Safariland (Model 29)or Bianchi (Model 5BH). Now, same location but I prefer an older style of holster. This is a copy of the Sunday holster often worn by Texas Rangers that were required to carry out of sight.

3-4 o'clock is where I carry. Appendix has always seemed like a bad idea, and I have never carried a gun small enough for it to be comfortable. Small of back (6 o'clock) is a bad idea to me too. I have heard quite a few stories of LEOs who either had a backup gun there, or who's primary gun ended up getting twisted around back there. To make a long story short, they usually ended up flat on their back for one reason or another and that was the end of their careers. Back pain is not fun.

For serious use a 1911 in a GI flap holster, secure and protected but when you dropped your web gear you also dropped your pistol. Went to a GI M9 shoulder holster and clipped the mag pouch to the chest strap, could drop web gear and still be armed. Since those days for general walking the woods and hunting a series of strong side carry holsters on a pistol belt of some type or on my trouser belt. Do have a Bianchi shoulder holster I used with my M29 to keep it out of the weather. Should a serious need arise to carry again will use the Springfield plastic OWB holster with my 1911 at 3-4 o'clock.

I never could see that where on your person you carried a gun made shooting yourself with it more or less desirable. Shooting yourself with your pistol is always possible should you do something stupid. It is very possible to injure yourself severely, undesirably and possibly fatally no matter where the holster is on your person. Just what happens depends, again, on just how dumb you were, not where the holster is attached.

Therefore I cannot see the prejudice about specific holster location in terms of shooting oneself. Accessibility, sure, but not that. Carrying a pistol anywhere has the potential to cause an extremely painful and permanent injury and birth control may be in the cards with other locations as well depending on how the gun is mishandled. Where you plug yourself often has to do with mishandling of the gun rather than specific holster location.

Certainly someone will not thank their lucky stars if they plug themselves through the hip or leg.

I got used to a shoulder holster in the Army (tanks). Hip carry just got snagged on everything inside the turret. I still carry that way quite a bit with my PPK especially when out fishing in waders. But, I also have a pancake, IWB and pocket holster depending on what I am doing and what I am wearing.

I sometimes carry my Commander or 9mm, usually IWB strong side.

My friend had gone to the toilet. He didn't want his heavy glock landing the floor.so he took it.out of his holster and hung it up on the coat hook on the door by the trigger guard.

A few weeks later we were at knob creek machine gun convention. I was explaining to some competitor friends how dangerous flicks were. He yells out from many tables.down I was talking about him. He must have bionic hearing. So he came down and told everyone what he had accomplished. It's funny how none of us keep our mouths shut over our misadventures even though they can be embarrassing. If we talk about it we may stop the next stupid accident

I have a bag I carry, on restroom use, waist carry gun goes into the bag, keeps it safe from dumb-oopses (so far anyways.) I've heard far too many stories of someone setting a gun atop a toilet tank and walking out, leaving it there, too. NOT a good idea. My bag has some life-saving gear (I'm rather allergic to wasps so I carry an Ana-Kit, for one thing) so I'm pretty OCD about tracking its' position 24/7 :)

Today I grabbed the P365 and an IWB leather holster and slipped it inside my pants. I put on a bit of winter weight apparently since it is a bit tight, lol.

Compared the overall size of going from 15 rounds in a G19 to 12 rounds in the P365 and it's amazing how much smaller the P365 package is.
