20 Gauge Double Ball Loads......

Question.....I have new Magtech brass shells. I have .557" round balls which weigh 260 grains each. Plastic wads which I will cut the petals off of. Shotgun is an as new single shot 20 gauge 3" magnum. I am not a shotgun loader but have reloaded for years both rifle and pistol. I am trying to find a load which suits my powder choices which are L'il Gun and SR4756. I have searched here and found a load....... 500 grains over 36.0 grains of L'il Gun. Would that be safe with 520 grains over 36.0 of L'il Gun in the Magtech casings? Thanks, Dave

Smokeless powder data for brass cases is slim. You may want to get plastic cases.

Thanks for the welcome but but but....my last post was Sep. 2014. Where did I go? Just not doing as much and I feel quite comfy reloading for my 57 Snider, 303 British and 577-450 Martini Henry. Doing some casting though. I tried .589" balls and they would not enter the muzzle. These .557" balls are some undersized but suitable for a try. I also have .577" bullets but really wanted to try the double round balls. So, using brass cases causes more recoil? Or is it just that 520 grains is too much? Does anyone know what SR4756 or SR4759 would be like in this load?
Just bored as hell being clammed into the house without my shooting buddies. David

Greetings Dante, I found the .575 Lee double cavity mold for some $20 to be quite deadly, accurate and fun to shoot.

Try 2 and then three .125 nitro card below the RB of 28 gauge to see which shoots better in your gun.

Your shotgun contains the pressure, don't expect a brass case designed for black powder to give you a big safety factor.

Measure the ID of the magtech brass, I think you can probably leave the petals on your wads and still easily load your round balls. You said the balls are 0.557" did you mean 0.575".

The SR4759 should only be used in a bull barrel gun like the H&R USH.

I have loaded a lot of .575 and .600 round balls in two ball loads in 20ga. I am still looking for a load with decent repeatable accuracy. I will not give out powder data because none of my loads have been pressure tested.

I would suggest you look for load data for a 1 1/4 oz shot weight. This would probably be a good start point.

I would not try for high velocity, keep the roundballs in the normal range for shot, 1200 to 1300 fps.

Personally I do not like lil gun for anything, one of those powders that gets a bit funky on the upper and lower charge weights.

What a great responses to my question. I have been around a long time (73 years) and have been reloading for most of that. I bought the magtech brass to use, thinking it would last longer. I will continue to look for answers. Lots of good suggestions here so far. Time is no problem.

The wall of the magtech hills is thinner than plastic or paper. You have to use 19 gauge wads to seal.

I used to shoot a Rossi coach gun in 20 ga. It would do snakeyes at 50 yds.
The load was two 58 cal roundballs masking taped together spue to spue.
over a mag load of reddot powder. Don't remember the the exact load but
it was from a shotshell loading book. I used paper hulls at the time, but
the plastic shell will do. After dropping the powder charge I used 5/8 card
wads over the powder, then wrap the taped roundballs with a cloth patch
and seat on the card wads, use enough card wads so as to keep the patched
roundballs just under where the shell crimps.Then melt some candle wax on
the roundballs and crimp. Sounds like a lot of work but the shells out shot
any 20 ga slug load I tried up to 50 yds. Might be something to try in this
corona virus lockup. Have fun.
