Besides the obvious, being a shotgun powder. I've come across load data for Longshot in .44 mag. and I think I've seen some data for rifle loads. I have a couple pounds of it, and I don't really load much shotgun (yet). The data posted on the Hodgdon site for the .44mag is very narrow 11 to 12 grs @ 1200 to 1300 range. So I just thought I'd ask you folks about your loads using Longshot. Maybe I can find another use for it. Is it suitable for reduced loads in rifles? Watcha you got?

It is a great powder for top end 10mm loads.

Similar to 10mm, it's one of a few powders that there's data for for .460 Rowland. Loading a ladder test for that tonight actually.

I have used it in the .40 S&W.

I have used it in the .40 S&W.

That was my first exposure to it, trying to find a powder - that was in stock - to load .40S&W with in 2012. It worked admirably for that. I tried loading some lighter .45ACP loads with it, but that didn't work out so well.

Castpics is online again Thanks to Al at NOE who is sponsoring it now,

you can look up load data either by caliber or by powder :bigsmyl2: http://castpics.net/dpl/index.php/reloaders-reference/load-lookup-by-powder

I have experimented with Longshot in .357 and also in .45 Colt. It worked, but Unique seemed to work better. Just my opinion. I still have some Longshot, and will use it again if needed.

+1 This is definitely THE POWDER for these.

I would contact Hodgdon before trying it in reduced rifle loads.

I am just guessing, but some powders do not do well in that application. It seems, in my limited use, that LongShot works best at higher pressures without a lot of air space. Better safe than sorry.

I believe I have read it is one of the top powders for pistol caliber carbine competitions but I have no personal experience with it.

I use it in 327 mag cast . That off the top of my head to think of.

A little birdie told me today that LongShot might be good in .327 loads.

I've never used it for reduced rifle loads (not sure I would recommend it either) but it's a fantastic hotrod shotgun powder and works really well in most magnum and high pressure autoloading pistol cartridges. I've used it in 357 and 44 magnum with heavy boolits at a little under magnum speeds with excellent results... it'll push boolits faster than say Unique or the like but not as quite as fast as a full on magnum powder like H110, etc. I've got 4 pounds left that I plan on using for working up some middle of the road 500 Magnum loads.

Like you discovered, it has a fairly narrow working window as far as charges go. I've found it to be an all or nothing powder and it almost always prefers to be loaded near/at max--velocities become erratic when going under recommended reloading data so make sure you're shooting over a chronograph to see what it's doing.

That's what I got it for also. I haven't got around to working up any shotgun loads with it yet. I just thought I'd look into seeing what else I can do with it. I'll likely load up some .44's with it also, just to see what happens, and also to go easy on my a2400 reserves since it seems to be sold out again.

I'm trying it in heavy 9 (147-155) and 10mm (200-220) loadings. Need to test them.

Welcome aboard Buddy1975.
I don't think we have a local contacts/meet up type of thread. Would be nice if we did. However, go to the thread 'Our town" drop down and open the 'welcome aboard to all new members' thread and introduce yourself.

460 rowland, it is smoking in that round. I get really good velocity and accuracy in my 6 inch longslide 1911.

It is one of the 2 powders my LGS has at the moment, that is why I was wondering if anyone has tried it in the 300BLK

The only shotgun primers I could get were some CCI Magnum primers at my local gun club.

The only 12-ga recipe with the AA shells and WAA12 1-1/8 wads I have called for Longshot. So I loaded up a box. May be too high velocity for competition, however.

289896

Also used Longshot in attempt to push a 147 gr JHP in 9mm to 1000 fps trying to replicate Federal HST Tactical specs. Only got to under 900 fps, however.

289898

Also use Longshot for a 440 grain bullet in my S&W 500 Magnum. Big boom.

It's a fairly utilitarian powder for me. I use it in 9mm, 40S&W, 10mm, and even 460S&W, and I plan to try it in 44RM.

+1on the 460 Rowland. I also have a 6" and it absolutely is the powder for this combination!

It does well in .38 Super loads with boolits, but when loading Hornady XTP's for serious stuff I use V-V N-105.

5.7 gr with 124gr bullet in 9mm; great HV shotgun powder for 12 or 20 ga. It does not like to be loaded down much in shotguns at least, likes a little pressure

Powder is hard to get right now, all I have is a jug of Longshot to feed my 10mm and 40sw.

I wanted to reload Colt 45 (LC) and tried Longshot, modeled it in Quickload for my 5.5" 1873 SAA Colt 45, used 8.2 grains with a 260 grain RNFP and it was a really nice reduced load.

I sometimes wonder if anyone has done any load development with Longshot for .38-44 loads for use in heavy frame .38spl and .357Mag guns..........

I load 40 and 10mm with longshot I use a lighter load with cast 180 and a heavy load with gold dots 180gr for 40 and 200gr for 10mm. I haven't chronoed the 40 but the 10mm loads are at 1200 for the cast 180 and 1200 with the 200gr gold dots. I was looking at trying it in the 45 colt but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I use it in .357SIG and top end loads for .45ACP. I prefer True Blue for the .45, but sometimes I just like the loud boom of Longshot.

I’ve had hot brass at the low end of .45ACP, so I won’t be loading my .45 Colt SAA with it. Now, when I get a Ruger .45 Colt…

32 H&R Mag and 100 grain boolits, accurate and fun.
