Out shooting one of my favorite long rifles today. (JR Salvo .20)I’m not sure if I posted this year before. This is a compilation of some pictures that are old and new. This is a 20 caliber long rifle. I load it with between five and 10 g of 4F. (22 Long rifle or 22 Magnum case as my Measure)
Five grains has little to no trouble going through three-quarter inch plywood at 25 yards and 10 gr gets me just about through a pressure treated 2 x 4. It also flips the 3/4 pound steel block holding the Clay without any trouble

First my favorite picture from the original owner. The cat has passed on but it’s still a great picture.

Are use a 22 pallet with a baby inserted as my projectile. Starts snug but easy to load with the ramrod. No patch needed

It also has no trouble dimpling up my steel targets, thus I use AR plate made for target shooting when backer needed.

I've never heard of a .20 cal. Neat.

.

Neat - :2_high5:

I would think it'll foul pretty quickly, though - how often does the bore need cleaning ?

Never had an issue but I do run a moist patch between shots (this is my general preference for my big target guns so it is 2nd nature)

The Sheridan air rifle uses a .20 cal pellet. Have you tried that one?

I've never heard of a .20 cal. Neat.

in the 13 edition of "cartridges of the world" in the wildcat section there are eichelberger cartridges down to .10 caliber at about 3000 fps.!

Nifty! 25 cal is the smallest I'd seen before this.

I`ve loved this little rifle since you first posted it over on another forum.
Would you be able to post or PM some basic dimensions such as barrel length, width at breech size of lock, etc?

pretty cool!

(don't ya just love the auto-spell check, "10 grand", "baby inserted")

Thanks much. It is the coolest thing since the invention of BP as far as i`m concerned.
I don`t know where to get a .20 cal barrel, but i do know where i can get a .22 liner up to 48 inches long

Now that is cool ! Any lube used on the pellet ? Heck a pound of powder last a loooooong time . What kind of accuracy you getting at 25 yds ?

Nice. I had not known anyone with a.20 cal muzzle loader before. This is pretty neat.
Thanks for sharing.

Egg, as posted elsewhere...
Length of pull is around 14”. Overall rifle length is about 60”. Weight is estimated at around 5-6 pounds. Smooth bore. Salvo built this barrel. (There was a .25 Up for sale at about the same time that had a rayl barrel.) 44” from about the touch hole to the muzzle.
points like a dream. Very nimble
His style was along the lines of “southern mountain.”
Pictures are hard for reference, maybe this will give you a better reference, 22 Long rifle/ spent case

No lube needed RU, I do swab with light damp patch between shots, no dry needed.
I’ve never shot it off the bench but freestanding I have no trouble drilling clays at 25 yards. I set them up as shown on those pieces of steel and get a satisfying “ting!!” with explosion of the Clay, the steel flips easily off the backstop. Yes, a great squirrel gun

Thanks for the extra photos and measurements. I may PM you at another time if this staying at home thing sticks...

Nice rifle. Have you considered trying Sheridan rifle pellets? They are .20

Plastikosmd

.20 work but the .22 pellets seat with moderate thumb followed by ramrod pressure/ramming
If it was a “boolit” and not a pellet, it would likely seat a bit too hard.
I tried a patched .177, .20 with and without wad, same with .22 pellet. Performance wise, these .22 bb/pellet combo fly true and with authority.
I am generally a heavy bench gun/slug guy. I routinely have to use a mallet or mechanical starter. Thus my sense of what is needed to start something may differ from a traditional shooter!

Many years back I made an under hammer BB pistol. I used a 22 short case for the powder measure. Barrel length was about 3"( all I could get with a .177" drill bit). It was a smooth bore but shot quite well. No problem hitting pop cans at 25 yards. No recoil but it sounded like a 38 special. At 25 yards it would put a BB through a 1" board, also hit paper targets at 100 yards. Had to use the more expensive polished BBs, the Daisy BBs had little flats on each side and would not shoot strait.

The efficiency and power of micro guns never ceases to amaze me.

Beautiful! The smallest bore I ever saw was .22 - a half scale "Bean rifle" made by Myron Carlsem (sp?) who used to be set up at Friendship many years ago - his specialty was hand forged Bean rifle furniture. IIRC, he used a 3/4" octagon barrel bored it out and sleeved it with an old 22 rifle barrel turned down.

That looks like it would put a big smile on your face every time you shoot it!
can you go into some detail on the barrel? Is it a smoothbore trade gun barrel style that is sleeved?

Thanks for sharing - really enjoyed the photos!

It appears to be sleeved
5/8” OD
Smooth bore (likely smart choice from a fouling/cleaning perspective)
