The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment'is like an ham-and-eggs breakfast ; the chicken was 'involved' but the pig was 'commited'.

In the 90's some friends and I bought a half dozen mexican mausers and some new in the white, stepped 6.5X55 swede barrels. I think we paid $39 for the rifles and $29 for the barrels. we shot them with Max loads for the 6.5X55 without any problems. The licensed gumsmith in the group told us that they were as strong as a K-98, but I didn't research it myself. I do know we built some fine shooters for almost nothing, even with new triggers etc, and they all shot MOA or less. Like a lot of other rifles I traded if off.

Kimber did the same thing. I have seen several of the Sweeds they rebarreld to 22/250 243, ect.
I have a 30/06 done by them on a vz24. Though I have seen many of the Sweed conversions by Kimber the 98 conversion I have is the only one I have seen on the 98 action.
BTW I bet you will have to do some cute tricks to get a 25/284 to feed with any reliability.

I've a SR Mexican M98 I rebarreled to 6.5 Swede also. I push the pressure in it to 60,00 psi and have had no problems. I don't regularly shoot those loads BTW. Most of my shooting with that rifle is with cast or loads in the 52-55,00 psi range. The psi's were measured in that rifle with an Oehler PBL BTW.

I'm with Bullshop, getting the 25-284 to feed will be a trick and more work, expense and frustration than it is worth. Rebarrel the Mex M98 to 6mm Rem, 257R or 6.5x55 and it will make a dandy rifle.

If you want a great cast bullet rifle consider the 30x57 or the 35x57 with 14" twists. Those cartridges are formed by shortening the 30-06 or 35 Whelen dies down so 8x57 cases are reformed with the '06/35W length necks. OAL is perfect for that length action and feeding will be slicker than the scum on a Lousianna swamp! That 14" twist barrel will work fine for medium/heavy weight cast bullets and medium weight jacketed bullets also.

In the late fifties and early sixties the Mexican made Small Ring Mausers were in great demand to build lightweight sporters. They have a reputation of being well made and of excellent steels. I agree with both Bullshop and Larry Gibson however. If you want a good 25 then take a close look at the 257 Ackley. It comes very close to the 25.284 and operates through the standard action without spending a lot of time and money. I have a couple chambered in the original 7x57 and another with a new 6.5x55 barrel. I sure wish that these actions were still commonly available. Neil

Thanks for all the input from all of you. I have a couple of 284 cartriges that ive been fooling with, but I think I'll take you advice and chamber it for the roberts sence I already have a reamer for that caliber. Maybe later when I get the itch for something new I'll run a AI reamer into it and play with for awhile. I'm building primarily for mule hunting in the rimrock we have in eastern Oregon. I've alwyas liked that kind of hunting. Killed my first legal buck about two belts down from the top in 1968 with my first rifle. It was 6.5X55 swede and it was stollen while I was in Vietnam. I stll miss it.

Eastern Oregon you say! I was stationed at Klamath Falls in the mid sixties and found that the 257 Roberts works great in that locale. I am getting the itch to build another 257 Roberts for my own use. I keep building them but grandkids keep needing them. This will be the sixth one that I have built. Good luck and you certainly are making a fine choice. Neil

257 Roberts is a great caliber. It was my first gunsmith build and I've enjoyed shooting it for everything from groundhogs to deer.

I used a Mexican to build my .458 X 2 on. Worked out well.

I have a 7x57 built on a Mexican Mod 36. It is an excellent action and the rifle handsome. If you look around you'll find the Mexican small ring, short 98 type actions and parts are very scarce and commanding relatively high prices. You have a treasure. I'd also stick to .257 Rbts. If you must get the most velocity then the .257 AI is a fine cartridge with near .25-06 performance and it will feed without having to alter the rails as is necessary for the fat .284 case and you'll have full magazine capacity. Personally I'd stick to the good old Roberts or 6mm Rem.

3Echo speaks very wise words.
Bullshop: Thanks but I have a reamer that has only done one barrel so far. BUT!!!!! Do you have a reamer for that 25 Copperhead? That would be fantastic. Neil

Ben,

I have been watching your post about your mausers for a long time. You must have a pretty good amount of them now. Is this on gun coated?
