Helping a you man at work... 17 k hornet.

One of the guys I work with did not know that I was a reloader... now that he does, he is asking for help. He has a few random Glocks and ARs but inherited some interesting stuff. Among them was an old Winchester bolt gun that had been converted to 17 K Hornet by his grandfather, full bull barrel, very nice trigger and so on. He has a set of dies that was made from the original chamber reamer by RCBS from way back. But, he has no experience with reloading and that is where I come it!!!

He has 22 rounds of formed brass and no bullets to work with. I am hoping someone can help us out with a few more rounds of formed brass or some bullets. I have some 22 Hornet brass and will see how successful I am at forming those. He has a basic reloading press, scale and other stuff he inherited but has been afraid to try to actually load rounds as he has zero experience.

Just looking to get him started down the rabbit hole the right way.

Pick up some new brass and give it a try. It shouldn't be to hard to form. But you do want the rifle there when you do to keep shoulder location right where you need it.

I think Hornady reintroduced the 17 hornet a few years back so that brass may be available this could be simply fire forming out to new chamber. Here 5-7 grns of bullseye and a small wad should do the job.

Bullets powder primers and data should be available. Do to differences in chambers on wildcat rifles work up slowly. This is a small case and pressures can jump quickly

I successfully form them in a one step die from virgin Hornet brass. Case on the right, is through the form die, middle, fireformed, left, loaded round. Check case length, I trim mine to 1.395", they may lengthen a bit when forming.

One step die? Do you mean the standard FL sizer?

No, it is a vice type form die which I have adapted to use in a heavy "O" frame press.

I am not even sure what is the "standard" weight bullet yet. The craziness around COVID have my life kinda upside down at the moment.
