Im wondering what the hottest 209 type shotgun primer is out of Winchester, Federal and CCI's? I keep looking at the variance in load data between them and it differs greatly when just switching the primer brand. Im looking for this to use im my muzzleloader for the fastest and hottest ignition with granular powder and a couple custom slug loads that im stuck on because of the primer thing.

mikebarb, in my experiance with the muzzleloader you need the lightest primer you can find. A hot primer will move the load prior to powder ignition. There are some people using 25 acp with small pistol primers and getting good results. With a modified breech plug.

To specifically answer your questiong the CCI-209-M and the Fed-209-A are pretty much to two hotest primers out there. Not sure which of the two is hotter but they pretty much trump everything else.

Secondly, the whole thing about using the lightest possible primers with the muzzle loader instead of the hotest is true. The muzzle-loader specific 209 primers (Forget which brand for sure but I think its Win.) are lighter then any standard 209.

I will have to look into that and get some, Thank you. I thought the bigger the flame the better it is with inlines.

I was hunting info on the internet about this too and here are a couple of sites that had info on 209 shotgun primers.

The best primier is the one that makes your gun group the best.

The Federal 209A is the hottest primer with the CCI 209M and the Winchester 209 next.

rem 209's were the coldest they warmed them up to the levels of the win.
if you want the coldest look through load data for ones that take 1/2 or 1 gr of powder more to reach the velocities of the other powders.

I think CCI 209 is to mildest these days.
