I was looking over on the Ruger forum an apparently Ruger is supposed to come out with a .44 Special on a .357 flat top frame.
It is for real as it is on Lipseys' Website.
They are supposed to be available Mid-January.
Just my luck....my "cash stash" is pretty well depleted at the moment.
However, this does spawn the debate, which is better; the 429421 or the RCBS 250-k? Cause it's sure lookin' like I'm gonna have one or the other sometime in the next year!!!!!!

...Thanks for the info! That sounds like a winner! Now the question for me is; How long will the wait be, till supply catches up to demand?

If only they'd make a 32-20/327 Mag combo gun......

For my part, one of each would be fine.

RCBS 44-250K with a hollowpoint conversion by Buckshot is the way to go. I'll pay full retail for this one if I have to! Tony

I own some Ruger stock, and got a shareholder report the other day. The recent product recall on the LCP pistols has them pretty tied up for a while. I don't expect any new gun releases for a while.

I am thinking you may be right on track with that idea! Taking some weight off the nose should help it shoot better at lower velocities.

Would this gun be single action or double action? Any steps towards a Ruger .44 SPL would be welcome.
I'd love to have a stainless Redhawk in a 4" BBL in .44 SPL....

Happy Shootin'! -Tom

Tom,
Single Action.
If you are familiar with the .357 Flattop Anniversary Models that came out around '05, it's the same gun except in .44 Special.
Barrell Lengths are said to be 4-5/8" & 5-1/2".
It will be blued finish and probably quite a bit lighter than a redhawk would be.

Yeah and $579 MSRP. I can live with that once./beagle

I'm not familiar with the flattop, but it sounds like a step in the right direction. Maybe one of these days they will make a .44 SPL Redhawk.
Yep. The Redhawk is indeed heavy, but it does what it needs to (for me, only after sending all three out for work. It's a shame Ruger can't do anything right the first time!).
My S & W 624 is a lightweight compared to the RH....

I am not a single action shooter. It seems like the 7/8 inch difference in barrel length between the 2 guns would be inconsequential. Does it make a difference? It seems like 4 5/8 and a 7 1/2 would make more sense.

Someone please educate me on this.

I grew up with the .357 Ruger in my hand in the late 50s and 60s. Wore two out.
The flattop with the four and five eights barrel is much handier. These old three screw .357 flattops were converted to .44 special by gunsmiths and were the pinnacle of single actions. I could not afford to have one made and suffered with several of the stock three screw short barrel ones. The long barreled ones were what a hacksaw was made for. Just a guess but I must have shot near a quarter of a million rounds through several in about thirty years.
How many rounds does it take to wear out a strong single action?
In those days all loads were, at least, maximum loads.
I lost interest in the Ruger single actions when they quit making the three screw guns. Might have to take a hard look at one of the new .44 specials though.

Life is good

I have attempted to shoot 4 5/8 RUGERS in 357 and 44 for years with poor results. They look good, but I couldn't get the performance I wanted out of them. The first 5.5 inch SUPER BLACK HAWK I had worked for me and most of my RUGERS are now in 5.5 inch barrel length...VAQUEROS/BISLEY VAQUEROS and their adjustable sighted siblings. Perfect compromise on recoil, muzzle blast, portability. The 7.5 inch guns are excellent, but not so easy to carry...and spend a lot more time in the safe than the 5.5s. I has a 10.5 inch SUPER BLACK HAWK and only shot about 500 rounds (most of them when I bought it) in a year and traded it in on a 45/70 MARLIN 1895 Cowboy when they came out.

If you're a Smith & Wesson revolver fan, try a 5 inch gun...and compare to a 4 or a 6 inch of the same model. Same situation....I have 5 inch Smiths in 44 magnum and 45 ACP versus 6 or 6.5 inch barrels.

A good holster works wonders with a long barrel. I have MILT SPARKS for the S&Ws and MERNICKLE for the RUGER single actions.

Pistol shooting tends to have some subtle things about it, especially in different disciplines like Cowboy Action Shooting or IDPA, etc. that involve shooting from the holster. You really need to shoot a pistol frequently to appreciate them. I do 40 rounds (or more) from 2 guns every day that I can....and I shoot down the hill from my home in a rural area.

Checked on the availability of these today and they say the first of the year.

Now, I'm debating....4 5/8 or 5 1/2.

The shorter barrel would carry better on the tractor but I had a hell of a time shooting my short barrelled Ruger .357 so I reckon it may boil down to the 5 1/2".

My dealer said they'd be made in lots of 250 with a total of 1,000 or each barrel length. That ain't many so I guess I better get on one here ASAP./beagle

I got one, swapped the springs, cut down the hammer hook to rid it of creep and LOVE it. What a lucky find.

I'll be plonking my money down for a pair of those critters :D

On second thoughts maybe I won't. I don't know how I'd go about importing those. I'll have a talk to the guy in the big gunshop in Sydney. He's imported special stuff from Ruger for me before, but this might be different.

Actually, as goofy as this sounds, I'd like to have something along the lines of a GP-101 in .44 Special.

Jim,

I would love to see the GP-101 or any other DA revolver offered in .44 Spl...
If you look at the logistics, it would take little effort to offer a .44 Spl version alongside any .44 Mag revolver.
All you'd have to do is stamp the barrel .44 Spl instead of .44 Mag, and drill the cylinder less to give you the proper length & throats for the Special cartridge.

Do you mean a GP-100?

Or and SP-101?

I don't think a .44 SPL would work in the smaller SP-101. But it would be dandy in a GP-100.

Am I missing something here. Potsy's thread begins on 11/18/08. There were a cpl of replies then a big jump to a date earlier this month. Wondering if my computer has humbled me again?

Lipsey's .44 Spl Ruger has been out for six months at least...is there another release or maybe... has Ruger has decided to bring one out as a standard catalog item?

Dale53...here's your weekly pic fix. Regards, Rodfac

Rodfac;
Rub it in!!

The reason for the lack of responses is probably due to the fact that most are still waiting on their revolver. I could have had one but passed on it as my dealer is also my friend. He got signed up with Lipsey because of me, so I am waiting with him. ("When you go to a dance, you leave with the girl you brung.).

Mine will get here eventually. My shooting buddy is waiting with me. Apparently, Ruger is shipping these in "drips and drabs".

Oh well, my 50th Anniversary .44 mag will just have to do until the Lipsey Special gets here.:veryconfu

Yep when I first saw this thread appear the other day I thought Ruger was going to add the .44 special to their regular line up. That was until I read a little further and back checked the posting dates. The light came on after awhile.
I have 5.5 inch .44 special and I love it. I wouldn't mind having the 4 3/4 inch as well.
It is a pistol worth owning.
