Picked up one today in 30-06. Used, but appears to have been a safe queen. Would like to know what year it was made, but I can't find any information. Browning’s web site lists nothing on this rifle. Any information would be much appreciated. The last 5 numbers of the serial number are “ PW187”. Can’t shoot it due to eye surgery. Doc says no shooting for 6 more weeks. I’ll just have to fondle it for a while.

Not positive but think those were only made in 1984. If it doesn't have a safety and doesn't have a rebounding hammer.... likely that is the gun you have. A few years later Winchester did another run of 1895s known as the Third Generation with the safety and rebounding hammer.

The Browning 1895s of 1984 (Second Generation) are closer to the originals than the Winchester Third Generation guns. While all the more modern remakes have superior steel to the old original First Generation Winchesters..... those in the 30-06 shouldn't be pushed to the modern 30-06 bolt gun pressure levels. Modern steel or no the 1895 is still a 114 year old rear locking lever design.

405, thanks sounds like mine. No safety or rebounding hammer. I load my 06's with a 165 gr to about 2700 fps with IMR 4895. Should be plenty safe for this action. Thanks for the information.
