358 Winchester data

I have a 358 Win built by Tim Malcolm. As per his recommendation I will be trying the rcbs 35-200 bullet. I believe he mentions 3031 powder working well for this, but for the life of me I cannot find data using cast and 3031. Target velocity is 1900-1950 fps. Along with that, where do you all find cast data? I have the Lyman book but could not really find what I was after in there. I looked at Hodgdons site, but it just showed a max load of 49 grains, no start load. I am thinking of starting in the 36-40 grain range, just making sure it was safe to do so

My cast full load/hunting load is a Lyman 358318/250 gr cast, Paper Patched over 43 gr 3031
for 2350fps over my Oehler 33. Bullet is seated out to the lands. Works in my 14 twist Douglas barrel Sav 110CL. NO GUARANTEES for your rifle.

I do now have that 35-200 RCBS mold and intend to try it this summer some time. Will probably Paper Patch it, too

Bolt gun built off a Mauser action. I have a thread and pictures in the factory rifles section. Has a 22.5 inch barrel

If I had to guess, I think 30ish grains would probably be closer to your target velocity. You might need some dacron filler to even out your load at that charge. If your interested, in a 1 in 12 bolt action I've been able to approach 2300 fps with the Lee version of that boolit cast out of 49/49/2 ACWW/soft lead/pewter, powdercoated, and Reloder 7. I was getting very usable accuracy under 2 moa, but ES was high, and my group dispersion was vertical, so I kept bumping the charge (towards jacketed max) in an attempt to settle down the ES. To my surprise, my groups held together as the velocity continued to climb. Recoil however, was becoming quite brisk, and I was distracted by something else before I found the max. I still have the next rung of the ladder sitting on my bench waiting...

I picked up some 3031 to try, but dacron filler is probably the solution to my velocity spreads, unless I want to kill my shoulder, that is!

35 grs of 3031 with the RCBS 200 RF was the first cast load I tried in the Rem700/JES .358 that I had. I didn’t have to try another load - that one shot so well.

Mine likes 40 grains of IMR 4320 and a tuft of dacron pillow filling with that bullet.

My BLR shot its tightest 100 yard 3-shot group with a 200 gr RCBS cast boolit from Missouri Bullets and 39 gr IMR 3031 powder. The outside of the bullet hole group could be covered with a dime (about .704"). One was calculated at 0.17" center to center by our range's resident benchrest shooter. By-the-way, that rifle also interlocked 4 jacketed Hornady bullets with 48 gr IMR 3031 at 100 yards

Do you have a velocity for your cast load?

I didn't chronograph it, but Quickload predicts 1955 fps, and it's within 50 fps of chronograph velocity the majority of the time.

I have a Santa Barbara 98 358 MBT also . The 35-250 SP over IMR 4350 up to the neck minus 3.0 gr ........or something like that ....... Anyway I did try a couple of other powders H322 wasn't all that great . Jacketed start minus 2.0 gr was a pretty good starting point .

The 4350 load with the 35-250 in the 1-14" 23" barrel clocked 2100 fps and turned in several <.75 CTC 5 shot groups and when I was feeling froggy and folks would leave me alone would turn in the same for 10 as long as I didn't mess it up or toss a check .

Does the BLR feed reliably? Been thinking about the model with iron sights in .358.

Mine feeds the NOE 360-230 RFN very well. It also thinks it’s a target rifle with 1” groups at 100 yards as long as I do my part.

My 358 is a 356 Winchester BB 94. Last range trip on an electronic target it put two shots in .15 inch. Leupold 2x Scout scope. I really hated to fire that third shot. It wound up 1.2 inch group. best one of the bay, but all were under three inches. Best I can see with that setup, but what an easy toting deer killer. That load was 2400, but it shoots 3031 the best. Mine will function with and I use reformed 308 brass.

Am using one of the MP 220 grain molds with the HP pin and Reloader-7...sub moa groups out of a Ruger Frontier rifle...

My friend has the same gun and is running the RCBS 200 but I don't know what powder...it was good enough to kill his last deer however....

Working up loads for my son's Savage 99 in .358 Win, I used home cast RCBS 200 gr FN and a water quenched WW alloy with 2% tin added. Sized to 0.360" the gun will do ~2" at 100 yds off a rest with a 3x scope mounted. The load is 19.0 grains of SR4759 with WLR primers and bullet seated to 2.615". Estimated velocity is ~1700 fps from the Savage 22" bbl. SR4759 is getting hard to find but you can do as well with 4227 with 22.0 grains.

I've killed two KY whitetails with it, and my son's got 3 to his credit. All were shot between 50 and 100 yds with chest cavity hits and with complete pass through. Two good holes providing plenty of blood trail for under 50 yd DRT. HTH's Rod

I have been shooting a 22' vanguard .358 win with lees 200 gr... 207 for me.. bullet with mule snot. Load was 38gr H322. fps was 2380
shoots ok will work on it some more this summer. Will also try PC and see where fps end up with usable accuracy

Comic Charlie, the magazines for my 358 BLR aren't very reliable. A gunsmith reworked the magazine lips, and they are good now. He doesn't think they will stay that way due to thin metal, so didn't charge for the work. He has a BLR 308 that's years older than mine, and the steel in his magazines are thicker, therefore no feeding problems.
