357 Max loads using 200gr flatnose gc

Have an Encore with a 20 inch MGM barrel. I have a lee 200gr flat nose gas, check bullet. Need some info from you guys to get started. Have imr 4198, lilgun, 4064,h335,4227,2400, and BLC2. Appreciate any info.

I have had a Contender carbine in 357 max for many years. I have two loads that I have settled on for mine - one for a plain base "plinker" and another for the 200 gr. or the 160 gr. gas check boolits. The light load is 8.5 gr of Unique for either a 173 gr SWCPB or a 155 gr RNPB for about 1250 fps. For the 200 gr GC or 160 GC's, I use about 15.2 gr of 2400 for about 1650 fps. Why so light for the GC boolit? My T/C carbine is so light weight that it has a very unpleasant vibration (not recoil) when my cheek is pressed to the stock above about 1800 fps with either the 158 GC boolits or the 200's. Doing a terminal ballistics test into soaked slightly compressed phone books with the 200's some years back at 40 yards, I found that 1600 fps would do everything I wanted it to do for penetration and expansion against the bears that raid my garden in late summer or walk my trails in the forest near my house. The longest shot would be 60 yards.

I agree on 1680. I have yet to find a bullet that in the maxi it couldn’t produce acceptable loads. I have had 5 Maxis. It’s a caliber I’ll always own. I have two today.

4227 is another that worked well and surprise to me 2015 and a 358627 shot very well but vel was pretty low.

Sorry, I use H110 for my 350LGD, I have not found loads I like with 4198, 4064, H335, 4227 or 2400.

I tested some lads last weekend and one particular load I liked was:

170gr GDFP Speer
24.0 gr H4227
S&B srp
Vel.: 2,122 FPS

No signs of pressure in my gun so always work up your loads as guns are different from barrel to barrel.

That load printed 1/2” group at 50 yds from my H&R 357 max.

That’s a GREAT Maxi bullet. It’s been a good load for me as well.

Sure wish Speer hadn’t dropped it. :(

Have a 24” encore with 1-14 twist. Likes 1680 best with RCBS 200. Under 2” groups at 100 yds
