I was wondering if anyone was making paper cartridges for Chassepots and had any advice to give. I’ve watched YouTube, but I am sure there is a lot more knowledge to be had from folks on this forum.
Thanks

there is a whole write up on a thread about them, the guy has had quite good luck and even though I will never own one it was quite fascinating to follow him. just use the search feature in the top right corner.

Yes.. I make both Chassepot and Dreyse ammunition..

There are basically two methods of making Chassepot cartridges.. one is the "traditional" method where you make a separate powder case and tie the bullet to it.. Looks pretty, but is a bit of a faff, and really needs the proper Chassepot bullet. (this is not me btw.. this is a chap I know who lives in Switzerland..)

There is however a much simpler method that uses a simple paper tube and a .45 bullet.. any .45/70 one will do..

Making paper ammunition is not that hard.. all you need is some mandrels to roll the cases on, stick glue and a bit of patience. Needle guns are surprisingly reliable! Percussion caps work better by being stabbed than by being hit... who knew?

A couple of pointers about primers. I only ever use standard 4 wing percussion caps. There are several folk who advocate using plastic toy caps, which although they work, many contain potassium chlorate, which WILL rot your gun unless you clean them out with hot water and soap.

The second point is that the Chassepot uses a 4 wing cap in the base of the case. I always put a few grains of powder in the cap just to boost the flash a bit, as I have had primers go off in the past, but not ignite the main charge..
