ok
.454 casull load question
i have a gas checked water quenched 308 gr. bullet .452 dia.
the closest my lyman load book gets to that is a 325 lino bullet.
with 6.5 gr.min. 8.5max unique
what would be a good starting charge for this?
i hate having to extrapolate like this.
it makes me nervous!
thanks

As I read your question, you are looking for a .454 load and not a .45 Colt level load.

The data you quoted was Lyman's for a .45 Colt in the Contender.

The .454 level loads for Unique with the 325 are 11.3 grains @ 38K CUP up to 12.6 grains @ 44K CUP.

i have a 45l.colt levergun and a raging bull 454 and no 325 boolits . thats why i
am fishing for tips.
so now i know where to start with colt contender loads.

sorry bout that
it's early and i spaced out.:???:

Bill,

IF Your looking for some mid range loads in .454 C cases I have some data. I found that at least in mt Freedom Arms M-83 the mid range loads can be amazingly accurate. And far easier on my aged wrists than the full bore Casull loads.

Try AA#9 - 19 grs as starting point. AA gives this as 19000 psi. 1300 fps. IIRC Hotter loads will probly be more accurate even.

I assume you are looking for mild loads, or you wouldn't be using Unique. I don't use Unique in .454 loads, but I do in .45 Colt. Bluedot is a more suitable powder for midrange loads in .454. I cast the Lyman 452651 from 25% linotype and 75% WW alloy. Gas checked and lubed it weighs about 325 grs. Ahead of 17 gr. of Bluedot, this chronographs about 1350 fps. in my revolvers, depending on barrel length. In my Puma rifle, it's around 1700 fps.

HS-6 13.0 gr 985 1,022

UNIQUE 10 gr 1010 1043

Apparently the software doesn't allow SPACES.

The first velocity figure is for a 4 3/4" barrel the next figure to the right is for a
7 1/2" barrel.

I had typed it out in a far easier to read format.

Bill,
I use 10 grains even Unique Federal 205 primer and a Lee .452 gas checked 310 grain boolit. Gets me about 1050 chonographed out of my Super Redhawk. I use this load under the RCBS270SAA cast at 290 grains too.

there sure are a lot of applications for 10 gr. of unique.
it seems like everytime i look up a load.
yep
10 of unique!

Don't think those "powder puff" loads won't kill deer. 10 grains of Unique under that 270SAA will blow right through the biggest deer you can find here in Michigan. I can't see how 400 fps more will kill one any faster. A moose, or big bear might be different, but I would not think twice about pulling the trigger on any deer, black bear, or elk within a reasonable range with that load, or the Lee 300WFN either, and they are down right comfortable to shoot too.
