Looking for suggestions on what shoots best from a 40-65. Looking for GG bullet around 400 grains. CPA rifle, Bartlein 30in 1:16 twist .408 groove barrel. Any 1 particular bullet that is a good go to for starting out with?

Ive had very food results with 3 bullets in my cpa silhouette rifle ( Douglas barrel 1-16 twist 30" length). 1) the lymnn snoover at 400 grains This bullet works well for me and is a close replica of the postel. 2) a 400 drn nasa from a mould made by Bernie Rowels at Old West moulds. only 1 larger grease groove it seats shallower allowing more powder room. 3) but not last is a Baco mould for a 425 grn Paper Patch that shoot very well. I shoot strictly Black Powder with spg or emmerts lube around 1200-1250 fps

I do not know anything about the chamber design of the CPA rifles, but in a Shiloh the Saeco #740 is one of the best bullets out there. The Buffalo Arms 400gr Money bullet ( 409400M4 ) is also quite excellent.

The Lyman #410663 is a 400 gr. mold, and drops around .410" diameter from my mold. This is a great design that's proven to work well in a lot of .40 caliber single shots.

I am not seeing the M4 listed on Buffalo Arms, they do have an M5 which says the first 3 bands are reduced diameter. Is this the same as the M4, perhaps without reduced diameter bands? Thanks to all for the suggestions so far.

I don't know why the mold Chris mentioned isn't on the BACO site, but I have one also. I bought mine some years back. I'd have to measure my drive bands, but I don't remember any being reduced. I does shoot well out of my Crossno Hepburn.

I've only played with PP for the last few years so haven't paid that mold much attention.

I think it might have been renamed. There was a fellow on the Shiloh forum that was complaining about name inconsistency in their mold part numbers. I wonder if he got them to renumber it?

I seem to have read that thread a while back. Not really a poster there but have been a member since about 2005 and catch up from occasionally.

Heck, maybe my mold does have a reduced drive brand. I did that to a Paul Jones .4585" 535 grain mold I have and it worked well there.

Regardless, the "Money" was money.

Chris.

Thanks for the info. It does seem to have to do with the reduced bands according to that link.

The above is 1.325" long, DDEPP, and weight in 16+1 or my 9+1 COWW/Lino is about 370-380gr

Sure does look neat, but really not ready to try paper patching at this point. Maybe down the road but for now I think just stick with grease groove bullet would be best for me.

Those using the BACO 409.... molds, what diameter are they dropping using what alloy? Maybe I overlooked it, but I didn't see that they listed .409 at say 20:1.

i also used the lyman snover 410663 mold/bullet with good results in both sharps and rollers.

Mine has it's driving bands at 0.409" using 16:1 alloy.

I've had good luck with the RCBS 40-400-BPS. Works well in my Browning 40-65.

That dual diameter PP boolit looks very interesting. A friend got Accurate to make something very similar and it shot fantastic out of my rifle. But getting one with the Money nose like that might be a good thing to explore.

Since this was first posted I've been doing more load development and shooting using a lighter bullet. My RCBS CSA 350 has proven to be very accurate in my .40-65 Rolling Block with IMR4198. It's done very well out to extremely long distance, and holds as good a group at 1,000 yds., as my Lyman 400 gr. and Snover 420 grain do in the same gun.

I have a RCBS .410 400gr snover, and a RCBS 320gr RN that literally shoots tiny little groups at 100 yds in in my .40/82.

Well I'm still waiting to get the CPA rifle, but I did end up getting a mold. I got the BACO 400Gn Money. And in the meantime picked up a Sharps 40-90SBN, and that bullet it showing real promise from the Sharps anyhow. Hopefully will work well in the CPA too if and when it's finally finished.
