Recently purchased an Uberti reproduction Navy Colt 1861 in 36 caliber. Bought a box of Hornady lead ball ($16 per 100) from Cabelas. No issues, but was wondering if there is a better price. I'll probably want another 200 - 300 rounds.

Although, now that I think of it, adding shipping costs probably means Cabelas is best for me (I generally order $50 of stuff to get the free shipping).

Looked at some molds on ebay but I think I'd have to cast a heck of a lot to make it worthwhile for me.

Cheers!

pick up a lee round ball mold and a ladle and cast your own, the lee molds are about 25 bucks. a bottom pour pot would really help if you have some extra money. click on the lee logo up on top of this page.

The Lee buckshot mold works great.
I clip them apart and then tumble them in my Rock Tumbler that I use for ball milling my BP.
They come out almost perfectly round and no Sprue
You could also check the prices on OOO buckshot from Shotgun Reloading Supply Houses

36 cal cap and ball requires a .375” ball. Not a .360” because it would undersize and the ball would not engage the rifling. Or a .380” ball works fine too if you need that extra diameter to engage the bore’s rifling.

And casting and getting yourself some lead and a mold would be the cheaper option instead of paying for the premium stuff and shipping costs. Unless you don’t want to deal with hot molten lead and the toxicity it produces during casting...

Ballistic Products has an 8lb jar of .380 diameter buckshot for $38. Thats about 667 balls in it which makes them about 5 1/2cents each! Todd/3leg
