Hey all, i got this a few months back and have shot round ball out of it but not really had the time to work up shot loads. Is it good to use plastic 20ga wods in a BP gun or will they melt?
thanks

No. BP won't make the wad seal. You just need a 20ga over powder wad and over shot wad. Or you could go old school and use tow over the powder and over the shot.

Ok got it, i have the shot wods, just didnt know if i might get a better pattern with plastic. WHat about putting a card and then plastic wod over the card?

It's a pain in the butt, but, you're better off to make your own paper shot cups. At least that's been my experience.

Gee my brother's German 20ga dbl worked great with plastic wads. The clay pigeons had a really bad day. We could only get one shot till the smoke cleared, but they fired fine. I did use a over shot card instead of a folded crimp, seeings how the barrels would not fold easy. Guess it depends on the barrel ID.

Gee, your brothers gun must not be a muzzleloader.

B/P and plastic wads will make a good glue in the barrel and broaden your cleaning experience. Use fibre wads from Track of the Wolf.

BPCR use plastic wads . .30” and .60 LDPE see Walters Wads. Many of my BPCR cartridge use plastic wads for better accuracy. They don’t melt and make a mess in your barrel try them you might be surprised.

A flat disc of from .030 to .060 in thickness is a lot different from a shot cup with over an inch of bearing surface against the bore.

Nuances aside, are you having fun overall with the rig?

Thanks everyone. Yes this thing is very fun to shoot. I kinda feel like Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.

I've used plastic wads in my 20gauge trade gun with a 42" barrel with no melting. They didn't pattern good even with a card wad under them. You can make shot cups out of post-it notes . sand a 5/8" dowel own enough that when you wrap the note paper it will slide down the barrel, fold it over the end no need to glue it. cut it to hold your shot load before you remove it from the dowel. You may need to cut slits to adjust the pattern Put a hard card wad under the cup load the cup empty with the ramrod then add the shot. It's a good idea to use 2 over shot wads in a double barrel to keep the recoil from loosing the second load

Good description and explanation of the paper shot cups, Boogie. Much the same as I do.

If I don't slit the cups I get a 2 INCH pattern at 25 yards. If you get holes in your patterns try bedding the shot in the cheapest cornbread mix you can find.

What does any of this have to do with Paper Patching?

This should be moved to the "Muzzle loading" section.
