Well I started Last year and now I go work on it whenever I can. I still need to add my window, and chimney, and finish off by nailding all the logs together. I need The chimney for it to be livable. Theres nothing inside but I need a fire to survive.

Tell us how you decided to chink it.

Well my plan was to add pink insulation foam which I did, from the inside. Then put 3 inch wood strips. And I did on the wall you can't see to the left.
Only thing is that it looks terrible. Really ugly. Il remove the ones on the wall. I think i might add something between the logs on the outside like mortar or something one day, but il leave it like that for now. And il add back my wood strips on the inside, except I havent decided if il cut them in half so it looks better, or just go around and collect saplings and branches to fill up the gaps . 3 inches looks so bad.

That is quite the accomplishment! I guess I've got about a dozen questions looking at the picture. What is the roofing? The logs are obviously cut for stacking and interlocking at the ends, but do they have a flat side for their full length or do they remain round? What is the white thing sticking out from under the front where a porch would be? Will you close in the ends at the bottom to prevent critters from taking up residence under the cabin? What kind of trees (logs) did you use? The visible foliage looks like fir... I really like the fact that you left some trees around the building site. Seems like so many cabin builders cut down everything at the building location and end up in a clearing. How far from groceries and supplies are you, and how difficult is access? What a great adventure for you.

First off I wanted to mention that if you look, the first few rows of logs are alittle smaller. That's I started building this alone. But when my dad saw what I was doing he joined in. Thats why the logs are much bigger after. You can imagine dragging a 6-10 inch log by hand alone on the forest floor thats 11 feet long.... He is obsessed with going there. Thats all he talks about. We are both hunters but he grew up being a trapper with his dad. We are both fans of the 18th, 19th century mountain man/western style of life you can say. So he was/is really excited. He is turning 51 in march and me 23.

For the roof I put cedar planks. Lumber jack told me to do that instead of pine since it repels water. Then added black tar paper, and then tin from a pool. Roofing tin was to expensive. Might add grass and moss on top to further water proof it and for the awesome look. Ive always wanted a moss roof.

Everything has been done with a small sthil ms 170 and a small Hudson bay style pack axe since anything bigger is super heavy to carry over there. Nothing was measured, or calculated. I cut flat spots on the end of the logs just so they inner-lock and nailed them together with 10-12 inch spikes. I guess you can say its kinda like a dovetail. A disadvantage to this is that now some logs have a little to much that has been cut off so they are gaps. But nothing that can't be fixed with insulating and a piece of wood in a few minutes.

Logs have remained mostly round. I past the chainsaw so that they have a "flatter" surface to get as close as possible to the log underneath but I mostly just removed the branch nubs that were gettting stuck on everything. I saw some cabins that have a V notch all the way down and they have been perfectly flattened.... This is not the case here.

The white thing sticking out is the pool tin, we used it for the roof and a layer of protection on the logs around the stove. Super heavy to drag through the swamp, forest, and then a steep hill/mountain. But yes, im in the makings of a porch... ;)

Il probably cut logs and add some sort of barricades so that critters don't go nesting underneath it. They will also add support as I will use them as legs for the logs.

As for the trees... you know more then me. Thast something I want to gain more knowledge about. We called it pine. Whatever trees you see in the picture... its those.

I wanted to keep trees. I like staying low in the woods, I didnt want to make a massive cut around the cabin. Although right infront of my front door, I have a small cleary filled with little saplings. We cut a decent amount of trees there.\ I would want to add a feeder and put feed for deer. Would be nice to have some wildlife.

That cabin isn't the only building on the land. We have another cottage. A real one with water. It's also a log cabin, and its 3 season, but there is 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, and living room. The land itself is pretty secluded. There are others around but we are pretty deep in the woods. Everyone else has a home with no land around a lake that we have access too. We're about 15-20 minutes from a gas station, groceries, restaurant and a small hardware/general store. But thats it. Its a small town/village. The land itself is close to 70 acres. The cottage is at the end of a drive way which is almost a small road deep in the woods away from the little road. And my log cabin is at the complete opposite side of that land on top of a mountain, that you need to cross a swamp and clearing to get too...

If anyone wants pictures, il upload a few more. Let me know.

Thanks for the answers and information. You're not quite as remote as I had imagined from the photo.
Actually, where I'm located is about the same situation as to groceries, gas, etc. I don't know what you can do about the pink insulation. It seems like a good idea, but it does look peculiar, and you wouldn't want any of it finding its way into your food, etc. You could continue to use it for the entire inside, and then cover it with plywood sheeting. If you scout around maybe you can find some natural stone for a backing for the woodstove. Nice project!

I've been sitting on 5 acres in Bonanza, OR for 15 years, a plot that is covered with trees and spectacular views. I have often dreamed of parking a cabin on the property for weekend or week long getaways. The plan included the purchase of a portable mill for harvest of my own trees for the 'living area' with a garage/basement half dug into the hillside with a concrete foundation.

Once, about 5 years ago, I had a squatter who lived in a tarp tented area in the bushes. Although the area is sparsely populated, maybe 10% of the plots have houses, the few neighbors I do have really look after each other. They ran the bastard off. I think the density is low because water is there, just deeper than most folks would like to drill for. Some residences haul water in, some harvest rain and snow melt. Annual precipitation will yield enough for occasional use, maybe enough for 2 people for full time occupancy.

Looking at he OP's photos and comments, the concept of a log structure is very doable. I watched a show where 2 guys erected a log cabin in Alaska in a few weeks with only a chain saw mill and manual labor. My plot would allow for equipment for the heavy overhead lifting. Still, a mountain view, a flickering wood stove and a good book sounds pretty relaxing. It doesn't hurt that every time I visit the property I run into deer and cotton tails. I need a good bow :)

I would be looking for limestone in the area and make Roman Concrete. Pretty much the same as regular concrete but mixed drier like a paste for easy packing to chink the gaps. Sea shells work good too, but the OP is nowhere near the ocean. Whenever I'm in the hills, I look for limestone, both for the possible water source and in a pinch make stone oven.

For food down I'm thinking a 2x6 box with mattress pad. Hinges to the wall on either the end or side and food down legs for the other end. If it was on the side you could use chain to support it. But it's take up less wall space if it was attached on the end.

You could do a bunk bed but have the bottom bunk be a work table.

You'll want to leave a gap above your window to allow for settling of the logs as they dry.
As for chinking, I had a cousin build a cabin (from old telephone poles: he retired from the local phone company), and he had some sort of speciality caulking just for that job. It was grey, and gritty, so that when it was dry it looked just like concrete, but still had elastic properties.
This was in the 80's, so there has to be something out there that is even better.

Alone in The Wilderness was a film self shot in the early 60's by Dick Proenneke, in which he documented his alaska home build on 16mm film, showing the entire process of building his home and store-house and garden. it used to be on youtube but is now only in pieces.

buy it here:

Dick was a hardy soul. He carried the gravel for the cabin floor up from the river in buckets. That was a bunch of trips.

+1, not expensive and wonderful nature videos to watch. Dick filmed himself doing some very careful woodwork and so on, and after watching him I believe I could do the same. Quite a teacher to be able to teach without words, old Dick. RIP Dick Proenneke

Went back for three days. I went back and forth between cottage and cabin. I didnt do much. I might buy a battery impact driver and bolt in big lag bolts from inside instead of 12 inch spikes. It's too hard with a sledge hammer and they dont go in at the right angle. Il see if I have enough money for the impact and cost of bolts.

I didnt do alo, went and started a few fires, cooked homemade sausage... Spent some time there with my dad. It was -10 in the cabin. In 10 minutes it was 5. I went out to cut a tree for firewood and in about 20 minutes, i went back and it was 25 in the cabin... it takes no time to heat up and cool off.

It's from the original owner. It was missing one. I'd like to find one that fits but these things are rare around here... I need a 6 inch one.
I think the thing that's on the stove is the top of a pulley or something....

Pretty easy to build if you have heavy machinery. If its by hand I would suggest smaller logs, maybe 4-5 inches max. You can imagine the weight of a full 10 foot tree trunk. We were two grown men and we arent that small... Took awhile to drag and lift.

but use RV antifreeze (supposedly non-poisonous) so it doesnt freeze
the antifreeze also serves to "preserve" them, in water they rot and it gets real rancid.

Kevin; I have built some log buildings in my time as a carpenter and general contractor. Here is something anyone building with logs should know: The logs will settle and/or shrink over the years. That means the roof will get closer to the floor. So, when you put in a window or a door leave some space above them so the settling logs won't cause your windows to break or your door to become unopenable. You need to allow more settling space for doors than windows but both need some. Fill the settling space with fiberglass insulation and cover that with wood trim - say 1x6. Your place isn't too big so you'll not need to put partitions in. If you do they should have settling space above them as well.

I did a few upgrades to the cabin.
Im almost done building my little workshop/wood storage shed in the back. I was really aiming for a lean-to style roof. I didn't want to make it the same shape as the cabin. I want a cabin, not an rv.

Very nice but let me give you some advice. Haul a small Hydraulic Jack up there so you can lift the Cabin Corners and then place Rocks under the Bottom Logs so they are at least 6" above the Dirt. This accomplish 2 things, first the Logs wont Rott and secondly the Cabin will never smell Moldy inside. Leave the Jack in the Cabin because you may have to adjust for a number of years.

Guess how I know - Cheers

Great job. I remember the several years I lived in my hunting cabin several miles from the road. No power, outhouse, water from a spring across the pond. Walked out for work before dawn many a sub zero morning towing a toboggan behind me with coyotes just off the trail. No worries as I had my trusty Blackhawk. Sitting at the porch table watching the snow blow across the pond in complete silence except for the wind in the pines with a glass front wood stove keeping me warm . Wouldn't trade that time for any money.
