For 475 Linebaugh 400-grain factory ammunition what is acceptable rule of thumb for velocity reduction from 7.5-inch barrel to 4.75-inch barrel?
***
Reloading bullets for chronographed muzzle velocity of 1100-1150 fps, which bullet expands more rapidly at impacts 20 feet from muzzle: Speer 400-gr Gold Dot or Hornady 400-gr XTP/HP? Is the difference in rapidity significant -- that is, is the more rapidly expanding bullet tremendously quicker and more violently expanding, or is the difference merely a nuance?

About 30 fps per inch of barrel.
Comparing the Speer with the lead nose to the XTP the Speer will expand quicker and more consistantly.

SeanMany thanks for your prompt reply. Is the difference dramatic?

I am confused!!!!! What do you plan on shooting at 20 feet?
If it is for big bear or other mean animal protection, I sure would not want an expanding bullet. I would want a hard cast boolit with a large meplat.

If this is for bear forget it...get something that will blow his tail off by-way-of his jaw bone.

If this is for 2 legged predetors in the moble-home without endangering the entire park then I suggest making some frangable 475 boolits from empty 45acp casings and some #6 or #9 shot. These won't shoot all the way threw a milk jug but it drops all the energy of a 240gr at 18 or 1900fps:Fire: Very destructive!

I started a thread about these some time ago...I now have some data and pics, if you are interested PM me.
