What is this Smith and Wesson revolver? Owner says it was made from 1937-46. It's 45 ACP. Supposed to be in excellent shape except for the stocks. Wood is missing, had Hogue rubber grips on it. They are asking $650.

I thought it was one of those M1917s that went to South America. Not sure what the star on the side plate is but it has a date of 1937 below it.

That's a 1937 Brazilian contract. Good gun!

Outpost75,
That's what I found after searching the interwebs. I had an M1917 made in 1918 a couple years ago. Was offered way more than I paid for it so sold it. I'm trying to buy this one now, waiting for seller to respond.

So are wood stocks available?

1917 and .38-44 grips fit. they are almost a direct copy of the 1917 smith. I have both and they shoot well.

Any N-frame stock should fit.

Service stocks for the pre-1950 .45 Hand Ejector Military or US M1917 would be appropriate, but the others will "work."

Tyler also makes the correct T-grip for this model and the M1917 in flat black finish like the WW2 models.

I bought a couple of these this last summer. The one you pictured is in excellent condition and may well be worth that price. But if you just want one to shoot, they can be had for much less. One thing I would suggest is that, unless you have vision like a raptor, is to make sure you get one whose rear sight is the square notch rather than the little semi circle.

This was my first one and while it was an extremely accurate revolver, I grew tired of squinting to see through the tiny rear sight. I bought another with the larger notch and am contemplating having it opened up a bit.

I decided not to get it... It was more of an impulse buy and an 1.5 hr drive through heavy traffic is not my idea of fun...

The original M1917 I had a couple years ago I paid $500 for but then a guy offered me $800 for it so who was I to turn down such a deal? ;)

Just curious (if you noticed) - was the serial number on the grip butt?
