Thinking about making some "silent thumpers"...

Maybe a 460gr at 700fps out of a 28" barrel?

What would be a clean powder with enough pressure spike to still seal the bore?...:-?

I would be inclined to use a 40-1 .003 oversized boolit with say 7 grains Unique and add as as needed. The old Lyman shows 12 gr Unique at 1010 in a Marlin 1895. If I did not have any Unique ( PANIC) I would use some faster shotgun powder... Red or Green dot...

I loaded some bore lapping slugs with 5 grs. of Trailboss and a 405 gr. boolit. No idea of the vel, but you could see them going. I doubt they made 700 fps. Had fun rolling a can around with them.

Bullseye would probably work well too without need for a filler. It lights very easily.

Reading an old article by Paul Matthews.
He liked a 355 grain bullet at 450 fps (yes, thats 450) with 3.8 grains of bullseye.
He says the same bullet will run 950 with 10 grains of Unique.
He claims one-hole accuracy @ 25 yards with the first load with .22 short noise.

9 gr Unique, .457 RB (pushed half into the mouth of the case) half exposed, standard primer, no filler. Some roll a little lube of the RB, but I'm not sure it's needed. Smiles all around.

I've done exactly as 725 suggested, except my charge was a bit smaller. CRS and years have gotten between me and the actual charge, but you get the drift. Out of a Gibbs Summit, it was about like a .22 CB Cap. The squirrel in my Pecan tree never saw it coming.[smilie=1:

Bullseye always works the best for cat's sneeze loads. I've used a pure lead 458124 at 410 fps with Bullseye. It is pretty quiet and quite accurate. I won't claim to win CBA matches with it as another on this forum does though. I mostly use a Rapine 460210HB over 2 gr Bullseye. Cast of dead soft lead of course. Out of the 29.5" barrel on my trapdoor target rifle it is about as loud as my RWS M54 .22cal pellet rifle.

What I'm thinking of - as a theoretical exercise - is a slow HEAVY load that you could use to take deer at close range, without a suppressor, in an urban depredation setting...

I'm thinking a 400+gr bullet at aprox 700 - 900 fps should be pretty quiet, yet still have the KE of a .357 handgun...

Sort of like a GIANT CB cap. . . . . :-D

Try about 4 gr of Titegroup or BE, verify boolit exits bore when trying new
very low charges !

Here is a link to Ed Harris' article on cat sneeze loads and some other interesting reading.

Nothing specific to the 45-70 but still a good read.

I may have to break out my rolling block and some Bullseye!

You might find something you can use here. http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm
They show 695fps with a 500gr Oregon trail bullet pushed by 9.0gr of HS7.

I have never used anything from his 45-70 tables, but, I love some of his 30-30 stuff.

I finally got around to setting up my LCT for 45-70 last night. Made up three of these:

Hornady Brass
Winchester Rifle Primers
300 Grain Cast bullet
8.0 grains Winchester 231
OAL 2.515

All three went "pop". One even hit the coffee can I was aiming at. Minimal recoil. Almost like shooting a .22 with that Kickeez recoil pad on my 1895G Marlin.

I think I want to use a different powder. I want a powder that will fill up the case more. I suspect its a very good idea to tip the muzzle up after loading the cartridge. I don't think I want to mess with adding a filler.

I think just grab my bow for urban areas or a 22lr with a pop bottle duct taped to the end. Now only this Info is for (theoretical exercise) and in no way do I condone these thoughts!! with the raccoons and living on the river front it's a WAR.

I think in one of my older Lyman Reloading Manual there is a RB load that is just a CB cap for the 45-70 just like mentioned in a post earlier in this thread.

Many loads work well in the 45-70, I have a Contender and a Marlin 1895 in 45-70, both are good shooters.
