Would anyone happen to know what the screw threads are for a forend cap on an 1886? I probably bought 200$ of repro screws but they arent long enough or they stripped. The ones I have now stripped. The originals both broke.

The repro screws don't seem to be long enough, I even ordered the extra long ones from Homestead parts but they still dont work. They seem to screw in 1-2 threads and then strip out.

I ordered a new front tenon and 2 screws now from taylors. Hopefully that will fix my problem but id like to know the thread count. if its possible il buy some at a hardware store and make my own.

If they are 6-48 you probably won't find them at a hardware store. Find a local gunsmith he will have scope mounting screws of different lengths in 6-48.

An Ace Hardware store by me does carry Gunsmith Thread screws.
But their selection is limited.
I think the longest ones are only 1/2" long

Well i looked on amazon and they only have 3-48. Shame. Ebay has some but they are pricey.
It would also be nice if I would know what the thread number means. No idea what 6-48 even is.

The #6 is the diameter of the screw.
The # 48 is the number of threads per inch.
Brownell's or Midway will have that size and thread screws.
A third number will be the length of the screw.
I E , 6-48 x1/2"
What length of screw do you need? Measured from the base of the head to the tip of the shank , and what style head is on the screw.
Filister head or countersunk ?

The proper length of the 1886 FA tip screw is 7/32" long under the head.
Yes # 6 x 48 TPI ( threads per inch )

They are a Oval head design, like the Weaver scope base screws.

Too long of a screw will go thru and possibly dent the tube

One more thig to look at is the tenon, the normal 86 rifle tenon is 15/16" wide side to side. while the rest of them is 13/16" wide. So you could have the wrong tenon in place if the screws are too short.

It worked fine with the original screws. repros dont work so good.

Some scope mount screws have to big a head on them. Get the screws from Wisner's and they will fit. I have seen many tenons that have been cross threaded or stripped out.

Thats why I ordered a new tenon. I had to get a new cap anyways to drill a whole for a sling anyways.
