I was watching one of these on you-tube the other day and was really impressed. Looks like he loaded that ammo pretty quick with the stripper clips. I was thinking one of those with a decent tube and cast boolits would be a real hoot for "vintage military rifle" competition.

Has anyone here had any experience with this old rifle? Seems like I saw one about 6 months ago, but don't remember what they were asking. Happy New Year!!!...........

They're around, but not so many. You can expect a price tag of well over $2,000 for a nice one.

Are you talking about the Winchester model 1895 with a box mag?

I have a win. 95. Russian are less often encountered but even a good unmolested 95 are pricey.

Mine is in 30US or 30-40 Krag. I have it and hunted it for 60 years.

I failed to mention that I do shoot cast in it also. Last fall I shot a 2 inch group with a 190gr cast at 100 yards.

It has a lyman receiver sight.

Winchester made these during WW1 for the Czar government in Russia. I read somewhere that the total number was over 300,000. I remember these being offered by Hunter's Lodge back in the mid 60's for $49.95, should have got at least one!.................

I have read that the 7.62X54R 1895s were the most produced, but the least encountered...

in the 60's and 70's they were the cheapest 95 out there. now they have taken off. I have 2 95's one a .30-40 rifle the other a .35 win. take down .

If I knew back then, what I know now.... oh well. Back in the 70’s I worked at a gun shop and can remember a 95 Winchester that would not sell because it was in 7.62x54R. Don’t remember when it finally moved, but it took a while.

I remember that back in the early '70s I could not find 7.62x54 ammo for a Mosin that my dad had brought back from the Korean War.
That would have kept me from buying a rifle I couldn't shoot.

i had one for a few years, a nice unsporterized one. it was a very smooth fast action and shot well. i never shot any cast thru it so cant comment on that, but with the Greek ammo, it would ring the 6" steel plate at 100 every time

A friend of mine wants to shoot his model 95 in 30-40 in the Roosevelt Commemorative Match at Camp Perry. Loading for rapid fire with the 30-40 will be a problem since it isn't a simple case of strip them in, as it is with the Russian. Might have to dig a small slit trench for the lever throw too! Just joking, but it will require some practice for him.

I had a 95' Russian that was sporterized. It shot 3" @ 100. Moved it down the road a while ago for a big purchase. I have a 95' that is chambered in 38-72 cal and its a flatside with 4 digit sequential serial in honest used conditon. Been working on 405 win brass to get her going, still looking for a mold that will function in it. All the 38-55boolits have a flat nose, they jam. I'm looking hard and being patient... one will come along eventually. Hopefully before I croak lol!
