Went to a gun show last weekend and picked up a Marling 30AW. When I bought it I thought it was a 336 and since the price was right, $255, I bought it without much inspection. It doesn't look to have been shot much and hardly carried. No wear on the bluing. Can anyone enlighten me on the differences between a 336 and a 30AW?

I bought it as a beater since the 336 I have has a beautiful figured stock and I hesitate to take it out much.

IIRC, the 30AW is made for a chain store, K mart maybe, but it is a 336 in a different configuration. Good buy, you did fine.

Basically it's a 336 with a short mag and a Birch stock. At least mine is.

It does have the birch stock but the mag is full length. Had to tighten the front band up some to keep it from twisting. When the rain stops, I'll get out to the range and see how it shoots.

Microgroove or conventional rifling?

Mine has the full length mag tube (holds 6 in mag). The only obvious difference from a 336 is the crossblot safety and birch stock. Mine shoots very well with Lee 311-170 fp. The rifling engages the borerider portion and makes closing the bolt on some rounds need firm pressure. I am looking to get a Lee 309-150 fp to see how it shoots. DALE

The 30AW was sold by Walmart in the early eighties for $200.00-$210.00. It was an economy model. They had less expensive wood and the sights were usually different. It was listed as part of the regular Marlin lineup. Any gun store could order it. It has been replaced with the 336W.

I lifted this from another site.
"Through the years there have been several Marlin mod 30's.
As you noted they presently have the mod. 30AW. This is not discernible from the picture in the web site, but the 30AW has a dove-tail front sight without a hood, and very plain wood (birch of some such). It is an "economy" version of the 336 as evidenced by the suggested retail price.
Through the years, they have used this model # on various versions of the 336. One I particularly like and am presently trying to find a good sample of the the Glenfield 30AS, which had a hardwood pistol grip stock, and a half-magazine. Two that I've seen converted to .30/30 Ackley improved were tack-drivers and would get 2,700 fps w/150gr bullets."

Thanks. That pretty much describes my rifle.
