Can you shoot a .45/70 in a .45/90 chamber or a .45/110. What happens? Can you compensate with a larger boolit seated further out? What are the different lengths of the .45/70 to .45/120 cases?

Thanks

IMO Yes you can ... I think I remember you can shorten the 45/90 to 45/70 length and can use a reamer to take out enough for the longer case to work
As I load and have shot in my 45/70 ... 45/60 rounds I loaded for Dad
The 45/60 is just a shortened 45/70 case and I use 45/70 dies to load the 45/60

BUT IMO you will never get the shorter case to shoot as good of groups even if you seat the bullets out
As the bullet in the case will never be as centered with lots less of the bullet in the case
Also The shorter case will slightly tip in the chamber
So the bullet will not enter the bore as straight

I shot 45-70 rounds loaded to an OAL of 2.55" in a single shot 45-120. The accuracy was terrible. I attribute this to the long bullet jump to the rifling.

At one time I had a win 1886 45/90 that I shot with 45/70 brass with bullets seated out to 45/90 oal. Remington 405s or Lymans 457193 shot very well. 45/90 brass was not available at the time.
