I cast and reload for both 10mm and .357 Mag. Have both calibers with a 6” barrel (Glock 40 and GP100).

Leaning towards 10mm just because of the wider meplat.

Of coarse, if the MCR in .357 Mag came with an additional 9mm cylinder then I would go with it (it would be a easier decision).

Use would be for range and woods back up.

Anyway, Looking at both in the Match Champion Revolver, but can’t decide between them and buying both isn’t a option.

Thoughts ?

357mag I think would probably have more stoping power for your bush back up and ca probably launch heavier boolits faster when needed

I say also the 357 mag since you can do more with it if you like.Beside what Cast outlaw stated.

I believe you need moon clips for 10mm which was deal breaker for me.

.357mag would absolutely be my choice.

.357. Moon clips are EVIL.

Have both a 4.2" MC 10mm and a standard 4" full underlug .357 Magnum....both are excellent shooters...

In your case I would say it just boils down to which caliber is more useful for you...a 10mm that will also run .40 S&W or a .357 that takes .38s... They will both handle 99% of woods walking tasks....

If you plan on only running cast bullets I would go 10mm just to be able to make a bigger hole...

Moon clips detract from revolver reliability.

357

I think either will do what you need.

10 allows lil heavier bullets, and better diameter on large game.

357 allows good power large bullet selection also availability. 357 Mag is more common.

I am fan of the 10mm, almost bought a GP in 10 myself. My state requires a 6” bbl for hunting.

IMHO the 357 in a revolver is best under 170g. Velocity droops too much with a short vented barrel for heavier. The 10 is best with a 180g but a cast WFN 200 isnt much longer and can bring excellent preformance to the table. My G40 shoots my 220 Cast right at 1200 fps. You wont see that velocity in the 357 with a 180 unless you get a 8” barrel and load a warm loading.

10mm reamed to 10mm mag.

Moon clips seem to be a bit of an issue, though.

I have one of each.

I USED to think of moon clips as "bad." UNTIL I actually used them and became a revolver shooter in USPSA.

I would say that to choose,,,,, you would need to evaluate the uses for the caliber. Hunting? Brass availability? Competition? Self Defense?
I will say that my MC in 10 mm is a better handing gun than my S&W 646 in 40 S&W in competition.
My .357 is a seriously fun gun to shoot as well.

So, choose which one by the uses matching the caliber & bullet choices.

357 But I am biased. I have the Match Champion in 357 and love the versatility.

i think the only way to really answer the question is for you to buy both. and yes, i am an enabler. LOL

I appreciate the feedback. Both calibers are easy to handle, fun to shoot and ok for backup.

I’m going to think about it a while as I’ve been thinking about a 41 mag or 44 mag too.

I have used moon clips extensively. After all that I still think they are bad. The worst part is they increase the likelihood of misfires as in some instances they must drag adjacent cartridges to the one being fired forward lightening the firing pin impact.

For games they are okay. Real life, not so much. Woods “back up” and hunting is a real problem with them. Carrying moon clipped rounds in the field as a reload is asking for them to bend. If I am knocked to the ground and have to fire an upward angling shot....not good. This is where adjacent cartridge drag rears its ugly head.

I'm pretty happy with my 10 mm Super Redhawk. Pick your poison I don't think it matters that much what caliber you get you can make them all work be happy with what you have chosen. Too many people have strong opinions about these things when many things work

Moon clips seem to be a bit of an issue, though.

If using anything other than 10mm in one of these guns one has to use "thick clips" to assure proper headspacing.

When using .40 S&W with the OEM clips, which are made for easy loading and unloading without a tool, I got 40% misfires when using .40 S&W...with thick clips 0 misfires. When using 10mm the round is actually headspacing on the case mouth not the clip. That is why in the article when the chamber was increased to take the 10mm Magnum there was misfires with standard 10mm rounds...using thick clips would eliminate that.

And personally I can't see deepening the chambers to take 10mm Magnum. It is nowhere to be found and when using full 10mm loads in the mid-frame revolver recoil is all one can ask for.. With the gun as stock one can run 10mm with no clips...deepen it to take Magnums and one can not...

Useless conversion...Bob

I have really been looking at these. I like the Ruger and the Smith. I'm just looking for a range gun. I keep spending money on rifles....

Groo here
I have shot both [Gp100 3inch] and can say that the choice boiles down to what you want to do.
The 357 is more common , the 10mm bigger.
I "like " moon clips for auto cases [hate them in 357] .
The big thing is the 357 can be loaded to orginal specs. [I see your a reloader]
But the 10mm can be loaded to [almost] 10 mag specs ..
The cylinders are the same length allowing the 10 to be seated long..
Depending on boolet , to 10 mag length allowing more slower burning powder and more speed.
I like my GP10 WC 3in as the gun size / weight more matches the round where as the 357 can be put in a smaller/lighter frame.
But I am all about matching gun to shell and both to task.[ to old to carry much more than I need to!!!]

I love my MC GP100 in 357 and i will never give that up. I also love my 1911 RIA in 10mm and i wouldnt trade that neither. Personal preference at this point. I dont like to reinvent the wheel so I prefer rimmed cartridges for revolvers since I'm not big on moon clips. I shoot my 357 mag a lot probably a lot more then my 10mm 1911. 357 has such a wide variety of loads from mouse farts to full house H110 loads. Not that you cant do that with 10mm and even shoot 40S&W in those too. Both fun cartridges really.

10mm Magnum ammo is currently manufactured and in stock at DoubleTap Ammunition- several different loads in fact.

http://www.doubletapammo.net/index.php?route=product/category&path=303_393

Reed's Ammunition and several others will custom load for the guys who are not set up for reloading.

We all know that shooting firearms is a purely subjective experience. What is obnoxious to me is a Desert Eagle in .440 CorBon. With a 5.5" .454 Casull single action I can go all day (being SOMEWHAT facetious here guys). My Super Redhawk has been reamed to 10mm Magnum and shortened to 6", and I can shoot 100 or more rounds in a day with no issue.
One of the guys at my gun club has done the conversion to 10mm magnum. I have put many rounds through it, and he has shot my SRH. As I have experienced at the range more than once, the guys who can shoot a S&W Scandium .44 Mag comfortably would shoot the Match Champion in 10mm Mag and ask, "That's it???" ROFLMAO!!!

On a side note, I don't believe it would be a good conversion for me. I do not like muzzle flash. All of my many 10mm mag loads are max performance loadings. In my shortened SRH, muzzle flash is demonstrated in some loads. My AMT and Contender do not do this. The shorter barrel on a MC would probably give me flash with every loading I have. Not acceptable to me. Besides, the 10mm magnum truly needs more barrel to realize its' potential.

I dont know where the hatred for the moon clips came from. I have shot them along side dozens of guys with same in Smiths and Colts with 45’s for decades there IS NO PROBLEM.

ID lean 10mm but thats me. Its a bigger bullet and my focus is hunting. I have handled and shot the “Wiley Capp” 3” gun and LOVE IT!! Still will eld up with one just because. But now I cant do anything with it that my G29 wont do. So I dont have one.

But there is a company offering 40 specific moon clips that eliminates some of the issues the 10mm moon clips on 40’s cause. (Ill find for ya if your really wanting PM me.)

IMHO, the 10can do anything the 357 has done PLUS. But availability of your not a re loder tilts things 357 and truthfully is NOT much of a second choice.

An endless debate,I prefer the as I jumped to the 10mm when it came out. Also have several .357,s and are comfortable with using them on anything I encounter here in eastern Ky. It sometimes tends to be a hard choice so just get both.

Since I have had considerable problems with moon clips, that shapes my opinion of them.

Go figure.

In the medium frame large bore ... my choice would not be either of your choices.

A 5 shot 44 would be my choice ... either the Ruger GP 100 4 inch 44 special ( my personal choice) or Smith's 4 inch model 69.

These have the benefit of plethora of bullet weights, styles and availability. A known bore diameter as well as load info that fits all circumstances. All in a light weight , medium frame revolver that fills your needs to a bill. Plus being build by company's that have spent millions on research and development and safety as well as fine looking and handling revolvers.

My 2 cents ... and worth every penny of what it cost you ... you are welcome.

Happy Holidays.
