i have a sporterized 1944 m98 mauser in 8x57. i was supposed to change it to 400 whelen but things came up and now it will be the 8x57. right now, i am cleaning the barrel(it was DIRTY) and then i'll slug the bore. when i first started to clean, the rifling (it starts about 3 or 4" from the bore to the muzzle) was gone. cleaning it, i can find the rifling!!! not using any rifling scope?, i'll say that is 90% good. another thing i will say, geez its dirty!!!! will the copper? and the black gunk come out!?! ;-) its soaking now in gunslicks foaming bore cleaner, but....wow, that thing needs cleaned!!!!

but anyway, i want to shoot and hunt(once in a while) with it. i'm thing that 1700-2000fps and either the lee 215gr karabiner or the lee 225gr maximum? i'm pretty set[smilie=b: on heavyweights, so no lightweights please:grin:. i'll only be shooting it with paper, rocks, cans.....not competitively. i'll hunt deer with the m98 only once in a while. i want to use only one mould, i have enuff!!!!!!

oh, by the way my lyman aperture sight needs a straight screw shoulder bolt?.? what do i use?

The 215 Karabiner is a very accurate and quite effective boolit at about 1800 fps. I shoot it in several of my 8X57 Mauser rifles. I cast of air-cooled wheelweight + 2% tin and the meplat on this slug provides perfect expansion and text-book mushroom with big game out ot 125 yards (the longest shot so far) Two inch, five shot groups at 100 yards on paper targets off the benchrest are easy to do if you have good eyesight. I have receiver peep sights on a couple of my Mausers so can do a little better. I size/lube to .325 and load with 19 grains of Alliant 2400 using no crimp and fireformed/neck sized brass.

Lyman will send you a screw for that sight. Accurate 33-205T and the lowly Lee 175 shot the best for me. I personally dont see the attraction of heavy for caliber bullets for paper or hunting deer size game. The 175 will whistle through just as well as the 200+ offerings but it's not my chicken.

that's good Texas(for the screw). i emailed lyman yesterday. i know that any 170-180gr would work, but i'm into heavyweights(like me!!![smilie=l:).

My favorite heavy 8mm mould is the Ideal 320378 (235 gr), which I size with a .325 sizing die. Very accurate and it has a classic look to it.
