It has a 36 inch octagonal barrel and weird open sights stamped 1853 centre fire did they make smoothbore 20 gauge guns with 36 inch octaganol full length barrels Iam in the isle of man near the uk I posted pictures of this a few years ago and thought it was a snider but it's definitely smoothbore looking at it with a bore light I can see traces of rifling at sages in the barrel 20 gauge she'll wont fit in too tight think the rifling is totally shot out or rusted out

Found a serial number on the upper tang clear as a bell after I cleaned it s or c then 38482

Any help guys would be appreciated

it was pretty common to bore out old rusted guns to 20 g ,and make them useful.......may also have to do with UK gunlaws.........I gather from the pics, the hammer is gone, but I can still make out the C Sharps Pat stamp on the plate.....See if you can find a serial number ,that will be useful for dating.Normally on the tang upper surface.....Its likely a military model ,NM 1859 or NM1863.....primes holes is filled ,if not may be later manufacture...If its a later/post war "buffalo model" its worth a bit even in that condition.

Looks like it has an extractor groove on the left chamber side... I would not be surprised if it is a model 1859 but altered for 50-70.

.

You have an extremely rare 36" barreled Model 1859 Rifle (model), of which only 600 were ever made out of approximately 115,000 guns.

All were originally chambered for a .52 caliber paper cartridge, with an external primer, so that one appears to have been converted to centre-fire.

The serial number pegs it as a Sharps New Model 1859; the barrel length as a Rifle Model.

It would have had an iron patchbox on the buttstock, and a long wooden forend fastened to the barrel by 3 barrel bands.

While one in 10% original issue condition is worth about $3000USD, and one in 95% original issue condition $$9000USD - yours is a much less valuable "relic", worth much less than one in 10% original issue condition.

Looking at the condition of the outside of the barrel & receiver, it's no wonder that the bore is missing it's rifling - BUT, a barrel that has what appears to be a smoothbore may actually just have rifling filled with lead.

I dunno much, but the serial is probably late 1864/1865....incidentally it is in the New Model 1863 series..C is 100,000,so yours is 138xxx......anyhoo,the New Model 1863 s dispensed with the patchbox.....and dunno about rarity, but more likely a carbine remodelled to CF....A Snider case is .66 dia,and that is also 24 ga shotshell.
