Oh my.

I went to my regular gun shop to say hi... We have some unfinished business, I'm still waiting for some official papers that are in the mail. Quite a bit of paperwork to buy a gun in Finland.

Chit chat and coffee, they had my old 2,5" Mod 66 in there and I had my "precision slug bullets" in my pocket. Just out of curiosity I slugged it and found out that one chamber is .3585+ while the others are under .358. I didn't remember that. I had that 66 from late 90's to 2015 or so. They had a 2002 2 1/2" mod 66 as well, despite a little slack from being fired quite a bit this -94 felt much better in every way, being also a little (50 grams) lighter. And no lock in -94 of course.

But:

Then, without warning, they showed me a 1982 4" 686 no dash,NIB !!! It has Hogue rubber grips for some reason so it's not a collectable. I slugged it, every chamber exactly the same feel push through with a .3583 slug...

Pretty hard to pass that one. I had a semiauto buying permit and I was able to convert it to a revolver one in a few hours. Can't buy a Glock, don't need one even though they work.

I went to the range but only shoot other guns. I just didn't have the heart to shoot this yet,not with factory J-rounds.

Feels like Christmas!

Good on ya!

I always liked the 'L' frame Smiths with target sights.

I would have to look, but I think some of them did come with a monogrip. Could have sworn one of my old ones did.

There's not a lot that 686 won't do for you! Congrats on a good score.

I would have done the same thing. My 686-0 is one that I would never sell or trade. It is super accurate and I'll bet yours will be as well. Mine loves H-110 and 180 gr boolits. These L frame guns are a joy and I have yet to see one that disappoints. Good decision for you.

I have two, a 6 inch and 3 inch barrels. One I use for hunting and the other I carry in the winter. Both a great guns and a joy to shoot. You will enjoy yours. Good luck and good shoot'in.

Thanks everyone,I'm still analyzing what I really got here.

When magnified,it looks like one cylinder has been fired. I can't see that with bare eye, depends on the light, too. So this is not unfired... do any guns leave factories unfired is another question though.

No "M" -stamp (recall) either. Nor a CIP proof stamp. I'll find out about grips... if these turn out to be original after all, I will not rush to shoot this one. Yes I know these were made to be used but... Even the plastic "tool bag" is in original condition.

I feel I saved this one from being clicked around. People "examine" revolvers in mysterious ways.

The 3 686s in our stable came with Hogue grips with the S&W logo molded in.

No S&W logo on these grips, only Hogue.

Gun doesn't look cleaned/ buffed, there also was copper in the barrel. Eliminator showed it. It could have been easily removed. Very faint turn marks in the cylinder, they could be buffed away with a shirt sleeve I think.

No CIP proof shots have been fired because there's no CIP stamp. This was imported before obligatory CIP proofing for all guns.

WOW! Jealousy is such a NEGATIVE emotion! You have done well...enjoy it and use it as it was meant to be used. Shoot it frequently! :D

Petander, as a rule, Smith & Wesson test fires every other cylinder before shipping. Yours looks like it has really been cleaned but the top strap is hard to clean up and yours is in new condition. I would rate it 100%. I know that the purist out there would say to leave the 3 fired cylinders un cleaned but never the less, you have a real jewel there. I just bought a 25-5 4" made in 1988 and it took about 5 months of trying to decide but today I just had to shoot it. I'm betting you will shoot it in the future.

Thanks, Murf.

They found wooden grips,I can have them just in case the Hogue turns out non-original. The only problem is,these grips come with a 586-1. Then the 586,having no grips, wouldn't cost much...

Things are getting very interesting,to say the least.

Just on a side note, the grips shown on that 586 will fit your Model 14 K frame as well. The grip sections of the K and L frame revolvers are the same.

I have large hands. This 586 grip gives really good, full support. But 38 has so little recoil, I like the small grip just fine. Also good as an all-around guest gun.

They also gave me this Hogue... but I like to keep things original. Whatever happens, this sure feels like Christmas!

That is a very pretty grip. It certainly would feel like Christmas with your recent acquisitions.
I predict you will love them all.
