Winchester Hi Wall in 38/55 arrived, and it is a shooter!

Got my hi wall in, removed the scope base and rings, put in filler screws, and put the rear sight back on. The marbles target peep was already on, and it snapped up smartly when I flipped it up. I got a handful of cartridges I had loaded up, and stepped outside my shop, looking into the field range where I shoot. On a bank at 125 yds I had a 3" clanger hanging. I knew as muddy as the ground was, it show a divet where the bullet hit and would be easy to adjust the sights. I shot it offhand, leaning against a post. At the shot it threw up a chunk of mud, about 10" low but dead on left to right. I used a SWAG to guestimate the amount needed and adjusted the stem of the peep sight up. At the next shot, it hit the top of the clanger. Just to make sure I shot another one, just about dead center. I shot the last 3 rounds and they finished taking the yellow paint off of the clanger. The trigger breaks at about #2 3/4. The rifle is immaculate, on all the blue and the wood, the seller way undersold it. I ended up getting 150 Postell slugs that weigh 380 grains, and about 500 of the Lee 250 gr slugs, done sized and lubed in the deal, with 100 rounds of new brass and a few fired ones, 25 loaded rounds, with 24grs of 4198 loaded. I also lucked up on 185 rounds of once fired brass for a very good price the other day. To say I am pleased is an understatement. Another board member asked me how I afford several single shot rifles a year, I told him I got rid of all my cheap stuff, some that I had had for 20 years, never shot. That and some pretty shrewd horsetrading has gotten me into about a dozen single shots, mostly 45/70 the last 2 years. I can send pics if someone will post them.

Is this an original Winchester or a modern Japan rifle?
Those 380 grain bullets caught my eye - 12 twist barrel?
375" or 380" groove?
2.085" or 2.130" case length?

Koger, to post your own pictures;

... up in the header on top of the "Quick Reply" section there is an icon that looks like a picture with little black squares on the four corners.

... click this icon and click on "choose file" under the "from computer" section.

After clicking the choose file, the options will include using your camera ... click this and snap a photo ... supposing you are using your phone or tablet.

After snapping your picture, push the "upload file" on the bottom ... wait for it to upload.

If a second photo is wanted ... just repeat.

When I click on the quick reply, left click does nothing, right click gets , print, all etc. I am needing to post pics from my I phone 6. I tried the jpg.box and it has nothing on the site to go to my camera. I really want to learn how to do this, can someone send me a pm with step by step.

I will step by step do this while trying to describe my movements;

1... put your curser in the "Quick Reply" box and clic it.
2... upper right on top of the message box, there is a "picture" of a tree with 4 small black box's on the 4 corners, click this picture.
3... this brings up a "Insert picture" box with a choice of "computer" or "url", click on the "from computer" box.
4... next click on "choose file" box.
5... now a box appears below giving a choice of places to choose your pictures from, click on "camera" .
6... when your camera comes on, snap a picture of your item.
7...now either accept or resnap your picture.
8... now that you accept the picture, click on the "upload picture"

9... your picture will appear in the "Quick Reply" box as written [ Attatchment] followed by letters, numbers and what have you.
10... now click the " post quick reply" on the lower right outside the Quick Reply" box.

Done.

If you can get hold of the old Ideal/Lyman mould #375248 (IIRC) that was the original design for short to midrange (that was about 75-200 yds back then) it ought to shoot well for you and since it’s under 300 grains it’s a lot more pleasant to shoot. I use that as a sort of default load when I play with the 38-55.

I am a big fan of crescent butt plates on these rifles, they just look and feel right! That blued finish on the butt plate looks great too and I have been considering doing that to my next rifle instead of the brass butt, besides that brass is maintenance intensive (a PITA actually) to keep it looking good.

I have a Uberti with a color case hardened finish crescent butt. It’s ok but I would much prefer a shotgun butt.

Mine is in .38-55 too.

I had a mold cut for mine for my old fashioned spec .382ish deep grooves.
