Ok, as fate would have it, I ended up with another FN 49. This one in 7mm Mauser. Having the adjustable gas port, I can see how they would be great for cast loads. This brings up my question (if this has been covered all ready, please forgive me), is leading a problem in the gas port of barrel. I have always wondered about this in Garands, too. I have always shot my cast out of my bolt guns. I am a novice on this one!!

rmcc,

I have shot many cast boolits out of my M49s and never had a problem with leading up the gas port. It may depend on the boolit composition. When in doubt, merely cut off the gas and manually stroke the bolt.

I hope this helps.

Years ago I had a FN49 30-06 in excellent condition. I shot a lot of 311284s cast of COWWs through it using 4895 at about 1850 fps. They were sized with Javelina lube and GC'd with Hornady GCs. I adjusted the gas vent adjustment so the cases ejected reliably to a couple feet to the right. The adjustment really doesn't adjust the gas port. I opens or closes a vent slot in the gas tube. That varies the pressure/thrust put on the gas piston. Opening the adjustment vent gas out of the gas tube. I never had any problem with leading, either in the bore or in the gas tube.

Wish I still had my FN49.

Wish I still had my FN49.
Me too because my brother has about 300 rounds of Federal 7mm Mauser ammo.
