I was cruising the Cabelas Gun Library hoping to find a nice gun. I didn't have a wish list, just looking. The Cabelas in Maine had a real nice Colt first generation 38-40 with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. That is a rare configuration in a Colt first generation, but i already have one, so I kept looking in the 38-40 category. Same library had this Marlin 1894 takedown with lots of original condition.

I got it on Monday, shot it on Tuesday...

CONGRATS! You literally found a needle in the haystack there! I cruise that place in person at least once a month and you never know what you will find. Christian is the head buyer there and he comes into a fair amount of great stuff. I picked up a 95 flatside in 38-72 from them for short $. It's now one of my favorite levers. Lots of ca-ca but a few gems sprinkled-in. If anybody needs me to take pics of a gun there let me know. I'm talking about a valuable gun for a serious buyer, not a mosin on the rack. Its a 45 min drive for me. Would not be a problem if you were a serious buyer.

I talked to Chris twice, once on each 38-40. He was very accommodating and I felt sure the gun was what I wanted and it is..

Yikes, I wouldn't want to destroy the original condition on this gun...
