yesterday, i took my win m94 out to get sighted in for saturday. this is what i got.

https://i.imgur.com/nBFtFB6.jpg

i haven't shot for around 1 1/2 months, thats why no. 1 is so off(2 shots for each, 3 shots for no. 5). i settled down and i shot no. 2. a few adjustments(going the wrong way!!!) later, then i shot no. 3. another adjustment, no. 4. another adjustment puts me dead on, no. 5.

the red diamond is around 3". you see 2 shots(which are on) and the one is either i pulled it or something else(me) did. but i won't mind a 1 1/4" group(outside to outside).

yes, i know, "you didn't shoot 10 shots. so you don't know the average group is." all i can say is so what. deer don't seem to mind, or rather they do!!!! soda cans, homemade steel targets, concrete blocks don't seem to mind too. i shot the dicken's out of her. heehee!!!!!

as you may already know, i had a win m94 (1973 version) in 30-30. i killed just about everything that walks, crawls and flies that is in PA. it was a good gun, but the old 30-30 just didn't do it fer me. as i got older, the win m94 goes back in my safe and it didn't reappear for about 25+/- years. now i got a rifle in 30-30 that i don't use.......JES Reboring to the rescue!!!!! he did a GREAT job on my old m94. if you ever have to rebore, see JES!!!!!! my hats off to JES!!!!!!

now i have a 35/30-30(or 35/30) and it shoots GREAT!!!! i use a 200gr fn gc(rcbs .360", lyman #2) with 20gr of 2400/dacron that goes 1726fps. recoil is next to none, i shot about 60-70 rounds in my t shirt and i didn't flinch.(people may know that i use wimp loads, i don't find that recoil bothers me, but why do it?)

i luv this rifle, i should've had the 35/30 years ago!!!!!

I understand new toys and the appeal of the unique, but what will the .35-30 do that the .35 Rem won't?

Having said that, my dream rifle, when I win the lotto, is a 35/30-40 krag on a custom Ruger Number one. That cartridge would be the untimate cast bullet cartridge.

For me the appeal of the .35/.30-30 was the availability of free range pickup brass at the DNR range, and the advantages of a RIMMED case for use with mild, "cat sneeze" loads without the primer blast driving the cases forward in the chamber and setting the shoulder back. No need to enlarge flash holes for subsonic loads, or keeping modified cases separate from those used for full loads.

A case full, about 30 grains of RL7, IMR3031, IMR4895, RL15 or Varget are all good woods hunting loads with Accurate 36-245D. I use a 1 grain tuft of Dacron over the powder charge and a pea-sized dab of white lithium grease over that and compress the charge with the seated bullet. No leading and no gascheck needed. Velocity is 1600-1700 fps depending upon the powder used.

The longer neck of the .35/.30-30 handles heavier bullets better than the .35 Remington. My most used load is Accurate 36-245D with 8 grains of Bullseye, which gives 1095 fps with mild report, one-hole 50-yard accuracy and astounding penetration with some riveting of the soft bullet if bones are hit. I cast these 1:40 tin-lead and use them for dispatching kitchen garden deer without disturbing the neighbors. I have also been known to shoot this bullet with SPG lube and 40 grains of Goex 3Fg and it is very satisfying.

a 35 rem isn't my cup of tea. the short neck of the 35 rem doesn't let me use 270-280gr, while the 35/30 does.

i have a 1898 spr armory(bubbasized) in 30-40 krag. i have killed deer with cast boolits. 165gr ranch dog with h4198 going around 1900fps . i had a 308 and '06(4 or 5 of them) but i sold them cuz the krag is all i need in 30 cal.

I just hate it when I read too much; I get the "I must have" syndrome. Now, I have a question about reloading for the 35-30. Is the brass for this cartridge simply neck'd up 30-30 brass and then fireformed?

My rifle uses .30-30 or .32 Winchester Special brass necked up with no other change. Neck annealiing helps, but fire-forming is not needed. You can also use Starline 2.080" brass for the .38-55 https://www.starlinebrass.com/38-55-brass-2080 and neck it down with no other change.

If you use longer .38-55 or .32-40 brass as feed stock, then trimming is necessary.

Some of you may be familiar with the "problem" of having a mold and no gun to shoot its bullet.

Such is my case. It concerns the 245-grain Lyman 358318, an elongated version of the classic 35 Remington 200-grain bullet. I believe the heavier number was intended for the .358 Winchester and the .35 Whelen.

Any opinions as to how that slug would work in a .35/30-30?

You can't make cheap brass out of 30-30 for one thing. I (JES) made a 30-30, 336 with a damaged bore into a 35-30 and it's a fun cartridge. I have tons of 30-30 brass and .357 bullets of all types, so it was an easy choice.

I got some .356/.358 dies for my 35-30. The lee bullet seater and factory crimp dies work fine, and I have a .356/.358 neck sizer to form and re size.. I hope to have one or the other some day, It made sense for me. I never thought of using the .357 die to neck size..My 35-30 is in pieces right now on my work bench. I had some refinishing and metal work to do, so I didn't hunt with it this year.

it should work well. during the next year or so, i'm going to go with 270gr bullshop stomper( https://bullshop.weebly.com/bullets.html ) in my 35/30.

I have had my Marlin in 35/30-30 in the woods with me every day this week. PBSmith I have used several different bullets and loads in mygun right now I am using 220 grain Speers flat points with a compressed load of 3031. I have a NOE mold 230gr flatpoint that came with the gun. I have also used Hornady 250 trainers that were amazingly accurate at 50 yards but opened up a little too much by 100. I have been very happy with the Sierra 200 grain hp’s also. Good luck.

the 200gr fn gc is the only boolit is real good. i've never expected that i could put 2 boolits in the same hole. the win m94 with williams fp sights is great too. i can't believe that i own this. i took my tc encore with a 23" MGM barrel in 500 linebaugh to hunt with Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon till now has been my 35/30.

Maybe if we get enough people interested, somebody will make a less expensive die set...just dreaming.....

fordwannabe
12-15-2019, 10:12 AM
I have the expensive die set and to be dead honest I don’t use it. It doesn’t resize the neck to the proper diameter nor does it have enough stem length to seat the bullets to the correct OAL FOR MY GUN! I used it for the initial sizing when I realized I couldn’t seat my bullets without running the cases through a 35 Remington die.. I also needed a different seating die so I pickled up a spare Lee 35 Remington die set and that is what I have been using with firefiormed cases.
If anybody wants the expensive die set make me an offer.
