At the metal salvage yard today, I bought about 25# of stained glass "H" frames thinking that they may have a high percent of tin in their make up. They are a very bright color like aluminum and are very plyable. Does anyone know what the aloy of these frames might be? Do they contain tin?

Most are pure lead but in the windows they are joined with 50/50 solder.

Kenneth, Those extrusions are called "came", and except for the joints which contain solder, are "commercially pure" lead. I've used hundreds of pounds of them.

I have a friend Steve who makes all sorts of stained glass bobbles he sells at flee markets. He saves the ends, missbent pieces... and I happily add them to my next 50 pound brew. The supplier he orders from states it is "Lead". Does not say what exact mix it is.. but it oxidizes like pure and bends like a pretzel.

Pure or almost pure.

Never had a problem associated with them anytime. Wish I could find more!

It should be pretty close to pure. I picked up a few hundred #s at work before they shut this operation down. It is very soft. I heard that some of the older stuff had some tin in it sometimes but the new if pure lead.

The guys are right about came being used as pure lead for practical purposes. I bought some a while back from a foundry that could provide the exact alloy. It was lead with .45% antimony and .06% copper. I'm sure there may be other recipes but they're all probably in the same ballpark. I use it in BPCR with about 3% tin added and it works just fine. In fact, my last black bear didn't complain either. Ron.
