So I do have some load books and only a small amount of knowledge loading cast so go easy on me. My Lyman 49 shows load data for a 173 gr boolit my Lyman 47 doesn't really have as much for 30-30 as I was hoping. Sorry for the ramble I will get to the question. I loaded some 165gr powder coated from Missouri with 18gr of imr4198 based off the 173 gr load data are these gonna be ok to shoot or should I have raised the start load due to the lighter boolit? I've read a lot and seen people say 18gr with 165 is ok just wanted to hear it from some people here who have done it. Also should note it's a Marlin 30-30 and the boolits are sized .311

My Lyman 50th lists 18.0 to 24.0 grains of 4198 for a 170-grain cast.
Hope this helps,

You are OK to use a bullet 10 gr lighter with the same start loads and max as 10 gr heavier.

The last couple of years I've found that pistol powders with 150-170 grain cast bullets (30-30 win), either bevel based or gas checked, works very well in accuracy. I'm stuck on Unique and AA#7 myself. If I was a kid again, those 150 gr bullets and 9 gr of Unique would be my all-around small game load. The 165-170 gr bullets with 14 (+) gr of AA#7 would do for medium game. Since I ain't been a kid in a while, I now kill a lot of paper. Pistol powders will do it.

Lyman #4 Cast Bullet Handbook confirms this load for a 170 gr cast.

My 30-30 load using the Lyman 173gr cast gas checked bullet it 25 grains of 3031 . It's not a max load , probably around 1700 fps , give or take a few fps but very accurate . It's the load my sister uses as well . Regards, Paul
