Well guys I finally finished cutting down that 1908 Brazilian to a mannlicher carbine style, 20 inch barrel. This is kind of like Buckshots "The Turk That Should've Been" except witht he 1908 Brazilian. Unlike Buckshot I didn't care whether the carbine had sling swivels on side or not. Also unlike his rifle I didn't put protective wings on the front sight, though it looked too cluttered. Furthermore unlike his I bent the bolt handle and scoped it. So here's alot of pictures of it. Now to see if the darn thing shoots.

I don't know how you are seeing these pictures if they are already open when you open this thread because they aren't for me. If they aren't for you then the one with an extra long line is the one with a full lenght picture, there's two pictures on that one line. If you still can't get it I'll post it again.

Guys,

Thanks for all your kind words.

Starmetal, very nice work. Saw something similar some time ago. Was a cut down swedish 96. The owner had cut the bbl back to 20" kept the top wood and bent the bolt and added a scope. Shot very well. Again good job. Frank

.............Joe, nicely done. I like the nosecap treatment. I've seen that before on Mannlichers and it's a clean looking alternative. Looks like you used a piece of the issue 'H' front end metal for it.

Buckshot,

First thanks for the compliments. Yes that nose piece is a part for the original nose cap, but not sure if it's what you said. Are you speakiing of the hollow H-cap that slides over the barrel and the end of the stock? If so, then the part I used it that steel cap that the H-cap slides over. It is the part that has the bayonet lug on it, which I cut off.

The bolt handle is alittle work to make, I didn't buy a preformed blank, I made it from scratch. I hollowed out the bolt knob to reduce weight. I mig welded it to the bolt body. Buckshot if you weld it just just 3/16ths to 1/4th inch at a time and walk away to let it cool, not much heat gets to the bolt body and you need need all that fancy stuff to weld up a bolt.

I did have a handful of bullets loaded, those Lyman 150 gr Loverins over 30 some grains of surplus 4895. I merely wanted to get the scope sighted in and shot them at 50 yards. Remember I told you even though this is a brand new barrel, it's groove diameter is fat at .289 and my bullets droped from the mould at .285. Well they didn't shoot real good out of the old original long 1908 barrel, but yesterday out of this new short fat barrel I had a group going where three went into one hole and the fourth right next to it. Shows better promise then the old barrel.

One thing I wanted to say about sling swivels. If a carbine, say such as the nice 1891 Argentines, doesn't have a bayonet attachment, then the swivels seem to be in mounted on the side of the rifle. But if it does have bayonet attachment, they are mounted in the normal full lenght rifle position. Have you noticed that? Also I don't know if other Mosin Nagants are this way, I never paid attention, but my Finn 39 has both on it, side and normal position.
