I have been shooting and hunting (waterfowl and small game) since I was 5 years old, but I had never shot a deer. I decided to get serious about it this year, and was lucky enough to shoot this doe on Saturday morning, about 45 minutes into the season. I used my Marlin 444 loaded with a 240gr RNFP from vendor CASTING MACHINE seated over a moderate charge of IMR4198. It was a close shot, maybe 30 yards, the bullet entered on the left, cut through the liver, clipped the lungs, and exited out the opposite side without damaging any meat. The deer ran about 40 yards and piled up dead. It was a great experience, and I'm sure I'll be spending more time chasing whitetail from now on!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191118/9f1a8ab5e9ee0de22e5c7b4e73330248.jpg

Good job! Enjoy that venison that you didn't have to whittle the blood shot off, "eat right up to the hole".

She was standing in front of the big cedar in the upper right of this picture when I shot her, and she fell about 40yds to my left at the edge of the woods. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191118/e28f12c782e9ac13dc601c7a3e8ab449.jpg

good job!!!!!!!!!

what kinda sights you put on?

i use my tc encore with a 23" MGM barrel in 444. my loads are quite mild(300gr fn gc with 2400/dacron goes 1624fps) but they are spectacular on deer!!! goes in and goes out, eat up to the hole.

My load is moving right around 1550-1600 fps as well. I'm happy with the result, but I was surprised how little reaction the deer had when hit.

i have a williams fp mounted on my win m94. the deer doesn't matter if its jacketed or cast. i've seen them fall down from shooting cast and i seen them run using jacketed. and vice versa.

You have started on a very enjoyable journey by harvesting your first deer. You have just made a memory that will be with you for as long as you live. As a bonus you have just provided some of the most healthy meat your family will ever enjoy. I also have a Marlin 444 and it does the job as you found out. A hearty congratulations to you. May you enjoy many more successful hunts.
