View Full Version : How many Pistols do you own that you've never shot?

This might be fun and interesting.

I have a Ruger 454 Casull I've had for a 3 years, I finally shot it today. When I bought it I was looking forward to firing it, I even loaded up some ammo, just didn't get around to it until today.

I was thinking and realized I also have some other pistols I've never shot. A S&W 38 special 637, another S&W 38 special, a 9mm of some kind, a Ruger SP101, and a Ruger GP100 Match Champion.

Just for kicks, how many pistols do you have that you haven't shot and how long have you had them? Do you plan on shooting them anytime soon?

Maybe this thread will inspire us to get our neglected possessions out and show 'em some love.

About 10-12 years ago I bought several weapons from the widow whose husband passed away,
and she wanted all the guns out of the house.

She had a trusted friend price and sell them.
And he did a good job, I bought a few modern weapons at a fair price.

However; neither of us knew much about old BP stuff.
I bought a beautiful, very heavily inlaid, half round, half octagon barrel, ivory tipped ramrod- pistol.
I thought it was a replica of a 'gentleman's pistol' or a replica of one part of a dueling set when he sold it for $200.

Upon further research, I found it isn't a replica. And there is no evidence that it was ever fired.
It was made in Italy in the middle or late 17th century.

I haven't fired it either.

Anything I own that is shootable gets shot... with one exception. I inherited the 1860 Colt revolver my great grandfather carried in the Civil War. It was passed down through the family and since I am somewhat active in the N-SSA, it was logical for me to receive it. While it was fired by my grand uncle in the 20th Century, I have not fired it in the 21st (yet - but I still plan to!)

There are also some small pistols from the turn of the last century that take obsolete ammo and are unlikely to ever be fired for that reason, hence my opening comment with the phrase “that is shootable.” I don’t guess anybody has a box of 38 rim fire they’d like to “donate to research” do they? ;)

I am a shooter, not so much a collector. However, my step dad was a casual shooter and hunter. He was good to my mother for the years of their marriage before his passing. My mother gifted my brother and I his guns. One of the items was a Texas Ranger commemorative set (4" Model 19 cased set with a commemorative Bowie knife). It was unfired. I really would like to fire it but out of respect for my step dad, I cannot bring myself to do so. He was quite proud of the boxed set that is unfired.

To date, none.

Last pistol bought was a Beretta 81, Fired it twice with factory and was only so so about the results. Fired it once more with Lee .314 90 gr tl truncated cone over 2 grains of Red Dot. All rounds dead center in bullseye. (Factory shot 2 inches low and 2 to 3 left of poa)

Pistol instantly endeared itself to my heart.

I do have a couple of single shot break action shotguns I have not shot. But I don't expect any real surprises either.

I have none that have not been fired, but I have a few that don't get fired often enough. I may have to do something about that today, or tomorrow, provided the weather stays decent.

Just 2. One is a Roddy Toyota built Colt NM .45 ACP Bullseye gun that I just haven't got around to shooting yet. But the other is an unfired by anyone S&W 25-2 in the wood presentation case that I am debating whether to shoot or leave unfired.

I forgot I'd had one of those, and never fired it either. I inherited from my Mom, who inherited it from her Dad.
He kept it on the seat when he drove freight wagons in the Texas Hill Country in the early 1900's.

I figured I'd had & looked at it long enough, so I passed it on to one of my cousins several years ago.

Ruger Single Action 454 Casull and 480 Ruger for me, along with a couple of S&W Shield 9mms bought to be loaner guns in the zombie apocalypse. Will get a roundtoit on all of them eventually. Surely I am not the only guy with 1000 pieces of both Starline 454 and 480 brass waiting to be loaded?

I picked up a series 3 Colt 1860 NIB at a local auction and was intending to fire it but last time I looked the price was more than double what I paid so now I’m not sure if I should just keep it NIB since I know I’ll only ever fire it once or twice.

I also have an antique S&W 38 double action that I got for cheap via an online auction a couple years back and haven’t brought it to the range yet but I’ve got 2 other similar guns and have shot them a couple times.

I only own 1 that I have not shot. In a weak moment I bought a double barrel SXS derringer.
It's a black powder muzzeloader of about 40 cal. And has double triggers and hammers.
One of the triggers does not hold after being cocked . It is of early European manufacture and a quality piece so I will have to make whatever it needs to fire. It just is low on priority as I always have a bunch of gun projects that need finished and this being more of a toy will be sometime later.

Some time ago (I'm not telling you how long, as it's embarrassing), I ordered a new RIA 1911 in 38 super, because I just had to have one, and they are soooo reasonably priced. I also bought new dies and new brass. It's all sitting in a stack in the corner of the gun safe. All untouched....well almost untouched, I did assemble some dummy rds and cycle them manually, in case the gun had an obvious issue...all cycled well using a NOE 128gr SWC, which if you look at that boolit, you'd think it's a TC. Maybe I'll load some ammo for it this winter?

11-19-2019, 02:13 AM
I only buy work horse guns and I shoot them... I used to live in Houston and I have bought a gun ON THE WAY to the range several times....
With the last gun, I picked it up after a competition and drove straight back to the range to chrono some hand loads... Sadly, I live in Kommiefornia, so I have to wait to pick up guns, cannot buy more than one pistol in a month and abide with a myriad of other absolutely stupid laws.

I understand a 10 day wait if you do not already have any firearms - maybe someone gets upset and goes to buy a gun to shoot someone. BUT if you ALREADY have a gun, this no longer applies... I can rant on this for a while...

BUT to OP's question, I pick guns that I really want and sell ones I don't shoot. So, I have no guns that I haven't shot and I almost always shoot them immediately or as soon as possible just to make sure that they work... And to find out what to shoot out of them. As hand loaders, we can dial in a load for a boolit and a gun - that gives us a huge advantage over the masses with bullets.

Only one. I have a Colt da .41 “thunderer” that I inherited from my grandfather that is missing the sear and cylinder stop that I have never gotten around to finding someone to repair (since it’s a obsolete calibre and they are not supposed to be the greatest shooters anyway) it was in it’s original box when my uncles divided up the guns but one of them threw the box away before I got it. It’s kind of a cool piece of history (about 1880 manufacture) and grandpa carried it in parades with the sheriff’s mounted patrol along with a ‘94 saddle ring carbine that one of my non gun guy uncles snagged.

In all the decades I have owned handguns there is only one handgun I have owned that I did not fire.
I made the mistake of purchasing an RG 357mag revolver. The barrel blew out during the second box of factory ammunition(I wasn't reloading at the time). This was back in the early 1970s.
The gun was replaced with a new one and the replacement went down the road without being fired.
