It is a little early in the year, but these stories popped into my head, so I searched them out again.

Many here have read them before, I think I first heard of them here, years ago.

When I was a child and though my early teens, my parents had a friend, Col. (Ret.) Max Goldman, who had been at the siege of Bastogne. According to him, the general's epithet was not correct, as publicized. It was a four-letter gutteral slang word identifying what comes out of the south end of a north-bound animal. The PRO cleaned it up for publicizing.

Mr. Goldman is long dead. I have never been able to confirm his version either way. I gotta admit, I prefer his version to any other.
