Hey guys.

I've finally worked up my load for the Uberti 1876 lever in the bottle neck .45-75. I'm burning 32 grains of IMR 3031 which kicks the 350 gr. boolits out at a smidge under 1200 FPS. I am tickled pink - it's deadly accurate and the recoil is like a puff of breeze on the shoulder. I could shoot it all day long.

While it is a great target load... do ya think it would handle a good sized white tail at close range? Say - under 100 yards? Or maybe even elk? Or is that too anemic for the hunting field?

Any of you with experience in this regard - your two cents is sincerely appreciated. I'd like to take it out this weekend if possible...

Cheers!

That should do just fine.

Well, yes I have game experience with a 45-75. But I believe that a gentleman had much more with fairly similar ballistics. He killed elk, moose, deer, and grizzly bear with it. His name is Theodore Roosevelt.

At 100 yards, in the right spot, it should be an easy and short trail of blood to the deer.

You won't have to track it very far.
It'll have a exit/wound channel about the size of a baseball.

Ditch that new fangly powder and use some real stuff :D
Mine gets almost 1500fps (touched it a couple times) with a 335 grain boolit over FFg black

Unless you are shooting cast iron deer that load will do just fine. That is about the same as my old load with holy black and a Gould bullet and that went through a 1200 pound bull.

WILL DO just fine!! Keep range short and aim small. That big 45 will handle the rest!!

I just got a LEE 460-350 RDGC mold and a Lyman 457122 Gould Express, hoping one of them is a shooter for me. I have sized that Gould Express down to 454 and shot it with excellent accuracy in my 450 Bushmaster bolt @ 1600 fps. (Accy dropped at 1200,1300& 1450 fps.)

You dont mention. What bullet are you using?

As with engines, where there is no substitute for cubic inches, there is no substitute for caliber. I don't know how many head of game I've killed with my 45-90 and prior to that, 45-70's and bullets from 420 gr. to 520 gr. Highest velocity was about 1250 fps and none of those critters walked away. As noted, within its range limitations, use it with confidence....and do your part.

.

You could probably throw a .45cal boolit at a deer and drop it...………. ;)

There isn't a deer in North America that could stop a 350 grain bullet from a 45-75. I have an original and once you get the brass/bullet problems solved so you can chamber a round that will shoot, it works great. I took mine to Alaska and my son shot this black bear with it. Other than that I have shot a deer and a few gophers with it. Smokeless 5744 will work great and you don't have to mess with all the filth of the black powder...

Dang that bullet killed me (DRT), and it was ONLY moving along at 1200 fps!
