Well, I got a mas 1936. This ugly gun ain't a 7.5 french. I also ain't a .308. Neither would chamber. So, what can I use to make a chamber cast. I like to tinker, so think cheap. I don't want to order the stuff, but i will if i must.

I was not sure about lead. thought lead might be too hot and get stuck inside. But with your blessing, I have new confidence.

He wasn't talking obout POURING a hot slug.
Make a rough slug with cold SOFT lead by impact.
You must have some reloading dies that would size down some brass to make interim feelers.
Actually I don't recommend either method. You run a real risk of damaging your chamber.
BUT whatever you do DONT pour hot lead in there!!!

I'm sure you've already checked, but could it have a partial case stuck in the chamber?

If the chamber is clear use cerrosafe! It does swell right after hardening but then shrinks back down so you can pop it out.

I think 12 bucks is cheap and you can find it at Brownell's.

I've used modeler's clay before as well.

Oiled the chamber well and slipped a rolled plug of it into the chamber and press fit the clay to the chamber's wall. popped the plug out with a cleaning rod and measured the plug to get a rough idea of what the chamber was. Found out I had a Type 99 Arisaka chambered for 308 Norma that way. It got a rebarrel back to 7.7 JAP and the garden got a nice rusty tomato stake.

it was how i found my 7.7 was cut back to a 300 savage.
and a fire forming confirmed it.

Candle wax would be cheap, easy to find & give you a quick idea of what you have.
